Enzymes are proteins that catalyze ( i.e., increase the rates of) chemical reactions. [1][2] In enzymatic reactions, the molecules at the beginning of the process are called substrates, and the enzyme converts them into different molecules, called the products. Almost all processes in a biological cell need enzymes to occur at significant rates. Since enzymes are selective for their substrates and speed up only a few reactions from among many possibilities, the set of enzymes made in a cell determines which metabolic pathways occur in that cell. Like all catalysts, enzymes work by lowering the activation energy (Ea‡) for a reaction, thus dramatically increasing the rate of the reaction. Most enzyme reaction rates are millions of times faster than those of comparable un-catalyzed reactions. As with all catalysts, enzymes are not consumed by the reactions they catalyze, nor do they alter the equilibrium of these reactions. However, enzymes do differ from most other catalysts by being much more specific. Enzymes are known to catalyze about 4,000 biochemical reactions.[3] A few RNA molecules called ribozymes also catalyze reactions, with an important example being some parts of the ribosome.[4][5] Synthetic molecules called artificial enzymes also display enzyme-like catalysis.[6] Enzyme activity can be affected by other molecules. Inhibitors are molecules that decrease enzyme activity; activators are molecules that increase activity. Many drugs and poisons are enzyme inhibitors. Activity is also affected by temperature, chemical environment (e.g., pH), and the concentration of substrate. Some enzymes are used commercially, for example, in the synthesis of antibiotics. In addition, some household products use enzymes to speed up biochemical reactions (e.g., enzymes in biological washing powders break down protein or fat stains on clothes; enzymes in meat tenderizers break down proteins, making the meat easier to chew). As early as the late 1700s and early 1800s, the digestion of meat by stomach secretions[7] and the conversion of starch to sugars by plant extracts and saliva were known. However, the mechanism by which this occurred had not been identified.[8]

3. How Dr. Neiper separated the enzyme can improve & maintain your health
October 26, 2009
Over thirty years ago, a German physician, Dr. Hans Neiper, faced with the problems that are still unresolved by mainstream medicine today, looked to nature to find a way that would deal with all and any type of inflammation.
Inflammation is anything in the body that should not be there. Any "non living tissue". And quite simply, this is just about anything that causes pain. Blockages, such as in the head or chest from mucus, like catarrh, sinus or bronchial problems, asthma, emphysema, or industrially induced problems including asbestosis.

8. Feeding Dogs Dairy Products
October 08, 2009
Whether or not dogs can eat dairy products such as milk, Yoghurt and cheese is one of the most commonly asked questions from new dog owners. Unfortunately there is no concise answer to this, since individual dogs vary.
The most abundant sugar in dairy products is lactose, which is a disaccharide that consists of bonded galactose and glucose fragments and which requires an enzyme called lactase to be able to digest it. The enzyme cleaves the lactose molecule into its two subunits, the simple sugars glucose and galactose, which can then be readily absorbed. When a mammal's body does not sec... (read more)

September 10, 2009
Women may experience hair fall or thinning of hair. If you have telogen effluvium then you will experience hair loss. Certain enzymes in male and female are genetically predisposed to hair fall. It is known as 5-alpha reductase enzyme. This enzyme coverts the testosterone hormone into another hormone known as DHT or dihydrotestosterone. This dihydrotestosterone gets attached to the hair lobe on the top of the head. This further weakens the hair follicle damaging the hair growth with every hair growth cycle. Your hair grows thinner day by day and leads to baldness. Hair loss products such as Pr... (read more)

20. What Is Autism Trying to Teach Us?
September 02, 2009
The rising numbers of children with autism could be a warning. Genetically, these children may be especially sensitive to some of the tens of thousands of pollutants in our environment. According to Discover magazine, autism researchers have begun paying attention to the digestive and immune disturbances that accompany the personality aberrations of autism. Autism is probably connected to genetics. That’s “genetics,” not “a gene.” And autism is probably connected to environment. Like most genetic phenomena, it’s a combination of nature and nurture.

21. Lactofree: enjoy the taste of milk without lactose
August 31, 2009
It is currently estimated that up to 15% of the UK population suffer from lactose intolerance.1 Many more sufferers are not even aware of their intoler¬ance. It is caused by a deficiency of lactase, an enzyme present in the lining of the small intestine which is needed to absorb and digest lactose (milk sugar). Lactase breaks down lactose into simpler forms of sugar called glucose and galactose (which is metabolised in the liver to glucose) which can be absorbed into the bloodstream. The body needs sugar as a source of fuel, but the only sugar the body is able to use is glucose. Therefore a... (read more)

Pro-hormones are the compounds which are converted into the anabolic hormones in the body with the help of enzymatic process. In brief, it can be stated that these have the same effect as that of the anabolic steroids and help in gaining the strength and the rapid muscle. But these pro-hormones have lesser magnitude as compared to the steroids because the enzyme conversion rate differs in both of them.
But now in the wider aspect, definition of pro-hormones has been changed. They are not just the precursors of the steroids but also they are also made up of some of the active compounds wh... (read more)
