A (AU) C (US)The term epinephrine is derived from the Greek roots epi- and nephros, and literally means on the kidney, in reference to the gland's anatomic location. The Latin roots ad- and renes have similar meanings, and give rise to adrenaline. The term epinephrine is often shortened to epi in medical jargon.[3] Japanese chemist Jokichi Takamine and his assistant Keizo Uenaka independently discovered epinephrine in 1900.[4][5] In 1901 Takamine successfully isolated and purified the hormone from the adrenal glands of sheep and oxen.[6] Epinephrine was first synthesized by Friedrich Stolz and Henry Drysdale Dakin, independently, in 1904.[5] Epinephrine is a powerful action, "fight or flight", hormone and also plays a central role in the short-term stress reaction. It is released from the adrenal glands when danger threatens or in an emergency, hence an Adrenaline rush. Such triggers may be threatening, exciting, or environmental stressor conditions such as high noise levels, or bright light and high ambient temperature (see Fight-or-flight response).[citation needed]

How is Liposuction Performed?
Prior to surgery, the targeted fat tissue is flushed with a solution comprised of anesthesia, saline and epinephrine. During liposuction, doctors insert a hollow wand through an incision in the skin. The wand is manipulated over fatty deposits to suction them out. ... (read more)

5. Important facts about Phentermine
March 06, 2009
Phentermine is an appetite suppression pill. It works with chemicals called neurotransmitters which are present within the brain. Phentermine has the ability to stimulate the neuron bundles in order to release a particular group of neurotransmitters called catecholamines. They include dopamine, epinephrine (before known as adrenalin) and norepinephrine (noradrenalin). They are all responsible to put a halt to the hunger based signal. Thus, you happen to lose your appetite, since your brain does not receive the hunger message.
Phentermine can easily change the leptin levels in the brain. A... (read more)

6. How Nicotine Is Absorbed Through The Body
February 04, 2009
Nicotine provides an almost immediate "kick" because it causes a discharge of epinephrine from the adrenal cortex. This stimulates the central nervous system and endocrine glands, which causes a sudden release of glucose. Stimulation is then followed by depression and fatigue, leading the user to seek more nicotine.
Nicotine is absorbed readily from tobacco smoke in the lungs, and it does not matter whether the tobacco smoke is from cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. Nicotine also is absorbed readily when tobacco is chewed. With regular use of tobacco, levels of nicotine accumulate in the bod... (read more)

9. How to Create an Adrenal Rush For a Max Lift Attempt
October 24, 2008
Adrenaline, also known as Epinephrine, is a hormone and neurotransmitter. It is secreted into the bloodstream, instantly preparing the body to handle emergency situations-often known as the "fight or flight" response. Stories of how it can give even the most ordinary of people a sudden rush of nearly superhuman strength are not uncommon-a mother lifts an impossibly heavy object in order to free her trapped child, an elderly man delivers a knock-out punch to a would be mugger or a hiker sprints to the top of a tall pine tree to escape a charging bear, and more.
When it's released into the ... (read more)

August 09, 2008
Horny Goat Weed works on 3 levels to increase libido and overall health and has been used for thousands of years to treat impotence and rejuvenate libido. Here we will look at how and why it works.
First, horny goat weed works as an adaptogen by increasing levels of epinephrine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine when they are depleted to increase energy.
The herb also works to reduce cortisol levels when they are high (an anti-stress effect). High stress conditions and increased cortisol levels saps energy levels, increases stress and causes fatigue, which are all known passi... (read more)

11. Dental Care in Pregnancy
July 14, 2008
Most regular dental treatment can be undergone during pregnancy without harm to the unborn child. The anaesthetic is only present in small amounts and in any case is not harmful, though some obstetricians prefer that epinephrine is not used. If the mother's dental health is good, then X-rays are usually avoided. But if she is in pain and an x-ray is needed, the use of lead aprons will protect the unborn child quite adequately.
Due to the change in hormones during pregnancy, the gums often get red and puffy and may feel tender. This is a form of gingivitis or gum inflammation that often oc... (read more)

12. Dental Anaesthesia
July 14, 2008
No one likes having a tooth pulled or filled, but these days dental anaesthesia numbs the pain so that nothing is felt except the numbness and a slight sting as the solution goes into the tissues. The numbness may be unpleasant until it wears off, but it's much better than having treatment without any.
Lidocaine is the most usual type of anaesthetic used by the dentist these days. It will contain more than just the solution that numbs your gum, though. Firstly there will be a vasoconstrictor like epinephrine to narrow the blood vessels and help the numbness last longer. There will also be... (read more)

15. Noise in The Office Can Cause Stress
February 15, 2008
Noise can be an irritant and the underlying cause of stress. According to a study by a Cornell University environmental psychologist, low-level noise in open-style offices seems to result in higher levels of stress and lower task motivation.
The study also suggest that even moderately noisy open offices might contribute significantly to health problems such as heart disease (due to elevated levels of epinephrine, a stress hormone) and musculoskeletal problems.
A study by the American Society of Interior Designers also showed that office productivity would increase if workspaces were... (read more)

17. New Beta blockers and your visit to the dentist
September 08, 2007
The concern with Inderal (propanolol) is not with amide local anaesthetics but with epinephrine. The interaction is as follows: As you know, there are two main classes of beta blockers - cardioselective and non-cardioselective. The cardioselective beta blockers block only the beta-1 receptors (those responsible for making the heart beat faster and more forcefully) but leave the beta-2 receptors open. The non-cardioselective beta blockers block both beta-1 and beta-2 receptors (those responsible for peripheral vasodilation and other effects). Also, as you know, epinephrine is an adrenergi... 19. Why Make-Up Sex Is Exciting
February 04, 2007
Make-up sex can be so exciting because prior to the evening (shall we say) turning hotly romantic, the upset that the couple was enduring was accompanied by the upset that was occurring in their bloodstreams: lots of epinephrine and adrenaline pumped from hormonal glands into both of their circulatory systems.
These "fight or flight" hormones are still physiologically in the blood as the fighting couple reaches a psychological place where they no longer want to make war on each other. As the negative emotions abate, their physical excitement levels remain high, while the desire to ... (read more)

21. Immunotherapy Treatment
January 17, 2007
There is no cure for most life-threatening allergies so, for the majority of severe allergy sufferers, avoidance of the specific allergens that trigger their reactions and being prepared to treat those that occur with an immediate shot of epinephrine are the only options.
Some people allergic to food, insect stings, or medications may outgrow or spontaneously become tolerant to their allergens.
For others, immunotherapy can offer a cure. For example, patients allergic to insect stings may attain long-term tolerance to insect venom through immunotherapy, a process during which careful... (read more)

22. Avoid Allergies | Allergies Treatment | Epinephrine
January 17, 2007
If you suffer from anaphylaxis, you can help prevent a reaction from occurring by avoiding the allergenic substance. However, avoidance is not enough. You cannot predict the movement of a flying insect, or always know the ingredients of your food. Surprises happen and sometimes you cannot avoid the harmful allergen. In this case you need to be prepared to treat the condition with epinephrine as soon as it arises. Side effects of epinephrine may include palpitations, tachycardia (an abnormally fast heartbeat), sweating, nausea and vomiting, and respiratory difficulty. Cardiac arrhythmias... (read more)

Moreover, it is safe for latex-allergic patients because unlike many syringes or IV tubes, the EpiPen® auto-injector contains no latex.
