The equator is the intersection of the Earth's surface with the plane perpendicular to the Earth's axis of rotation and containing the Earth's center of mass. In more simple language, it is an imaginary line on the Earth's surface approximately equidistant from the North Pole and South Pole that divides the Earth into a Northern Hemisphere and a Southern Hemisphere. The equators of other planets and astronomical bodies are defined analogously. The latitude of the equator is, by definition, 0°. The length of Earth's equator is about 40,075&_160;kilometres (24,901.5&_160;mi). The equator is one of the five main circles of latitude that are based on the relationship between the Earth's axis of rotation and the plane of the Earth's orbit around the sun. It is the only line of latitude which is also a great circle. The imaginary circle obtained when the Earth's equator is projected onto the sky is called the celestial equator. The Sun, in its seasonal movement through the sky, passes directly over the equator twice each year, on the March and September equinoxes. At the equator, the rays of the sun are perpendicular to the surface of the earth on these dates.

1. The Voyage of the Beagle
August 29, 2008
The inhabitants are between two and three hundred in number; they are nearly all people of colour, who have been banished for political crimes from the Republic of the Equator, of which Quito is the capital. The settlement is placed about four and a half miles inland, and at a height probably of a thousand feet. In the first part of the road we passed through leafless thickets, as in Chatham Islands at Galapagos Islands. Higher up, the woods gradually became greener; and as soon as we crossed the ridge of the Galapagos islands, we were cooled by a fine southerly breeze, and our sight refresh... (read more)

History of Satellite TV
Arthur C. Clarke's Vision Sir Arthur C. Clarke is generally credited with coming up with the concept of using satellites in geosynchronous orbits to relay communications signals around the world. In his honor, these are sometimes referred to as Clarke orbits. A geosynchronous orbit simply means that the satellite is placed at an altitude of 22,300 miles above the earth's equator and travels at the same speed as the earth's rotational speed. This keeps the satellite in the same spot above the earth at all times. Clarke wrote an article titled "Ext... (read more)

In reality the history of the rose in America would probably have begun with the forty million year old fossil found at Florissant, Colorado. There are several different types of satellite phone service, with one of the more important differences being whether the satellite phone service uses 'low earth orbit' (LEO) satellites or geosynchronous (also called geostationary) satellites.
Geosynchronous
Geosynchronous satellites are at a fixed height of about 22,300 miles above the earth's surface. At this height, the satellite rotates freely around the earth at the same speed as the earth is rotating, so the satellite appears to stay fixed in the same spot in the sky.
