An evaporative cooler (also swamp cooler, desert cooler, and wet air cooler) is a device that cools air through the simple evaporation of water. Evaporative cooling differs from air conditioning by refrigeration and absorptive refrigeration, which use vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycles. In the United States, the use of the term swamp cooler may be due to the odor of algae produced by early units.[1] Air washers and wet cooling towers use the same principles as evaporative coolers, but are optimized for purposes other than air cooling.

In moderate humidity locations there are many cost-effective uses for evaporative cooling, in addition to their widespread use in dry climates. For example, industrial plants, commercial kitchens, laundries, dry cleaners, greenhouses, spot cooling (loading docks, warehouses, factories, construction sites, athletic events, workshops, garages, and kennels) and confinement farming (poultry ranches, hog, and dairy) all often employ evaporative cooling. In highly humid climates, evaporative cooling may have little thermal comfort benefit beyond the increased ventilation and air movement it provides.

The evaporative cooler was the subject of numerous U. S. patents in the twentieth century; many of these, starting in 1906,[2] suggested or assumed the use of excelsior (wood wool) pads as the elements to get lots of water in contact with moving air to thereby cool the air. A typical design, as shown in a 1945 patent, includes a water reservoir (usually with level controlled by a float valve), a pump to circulate water over the excelsior pads, and a squirrel-cage fan to draw air through the pads and into the house.[3] This design and material remains dominant in swamp coolers in the American Southwest, where they are also used to increase humidity.[4]

Civilizations throughout the ages have found ingenious ways to combat the heat in their region. An earlier form of air cooling, the windcatcher (Bâd gir), was invented in Persia (Iran) thousands of years ago in the form of wind shafts on the roof, which caught the wind and passed it through water and blew the cooled air into the building.[citation needed]

1. Advantages Of Portable Swamp Evaporative Coolers
September 30, 2009

A swamp evaporative cooler can give you the best of cooling technologies without the disadvantages of air conditioning. Unlike air conditioners, swamp evaporative coolers require very little energy in order to work well, as long as the appropriate environmental conditions are met. Speaking of the environment, evaporative coolers are pollutant free because they work using nature’s own cooling mechanism. The term swamp evaporative cooler is a bit misleading because an evaporative cooler actually has nothing to do with a swamp and in fact, wouldn’t work in swamp-like conditions. An evaporativ... 3. Increase efficiency of your Industry by Cooling System
November 21, 2008

Working indoors in the summer months is painful. Not only because you can't enjoy the wonderful weather outside, but because even with air conditioning, some offices can become hot and stuffy, creating a less than ideal working environment. Even with air conditioners, the air can become overly dry, causing cracked skin and lips. It also doesn't make for a nice feeling when you finally do get outside. An industrial spot cooling system will keep workers cool and refreshed, right at their desks -- at a fraction of the cost of an air conditioning unit. Workers will stay productive, despite ... 4. Evaporative Coolers - An Effective Way to Keep Cool
July 10, 2008

Evaporative Coolers have become synonymous to energy efficiency. Seeing the needs of the time, especially when people prefer to go in for a cooling equipment that can be carried from one room to another and gives them the complete comfort, portable evaporative coolers seems to be the best option. The evaporative coolers looks elegant and successfully work at places that are hot and generally have very high humidity. They cool the air and relieve the user from hot air collected around by pulling it in. The air then passes through the damp wet pads resulting in fall of temperature. Thereby reli... (read more)

5. Portable Cooling Guide: How to Choose Between a Portable Air Conditioner and a Swamp Cooler
June 29, 2008

When it is impractical, too expensive or too hard to install a standard, permanent air conditioning system, it may be necessary to consider a portable cooling solution. The two portable cooling solutions that people are choosing from are portable air conditioners and swamp coolers. Both of these products are designed to cool homes but they use different technologies to perform this function. These cooling solutions are often interchanged even though they are very different. For one thing, a portable air conditioner removes humidity from the air. A swamp cooler actually adds humidity to t... (read more)

6. NewAir AF-321 Swamp Cooler Product Review: Five Reasons to Purchase
May 19, 2008

1. Cost Effective: Swamp coolers in general are extremely cost effective. The estimated cost is 1/4 that of refrigerated air. The power consumption is limited to the fan and water pump as opposed to an air conditioner’s compressor, pump and blower. The NewAir AF-321 Swamp Cooler runs on only 85 watts of power. That’s the same amount of power as a light bulb. It also does not use a water pump, but just a small motor to rotate the cooling pad. This means it uses less power than swamp coolers with water pumps and is quieter as well. 2. Cheap to Install: Swamp coolers only cost 1/8 to 1/2 th... (read more)

8. Woven Wood Blinds - The ins and outs.
October 28, 2006

I love wood woven blinds because they are the same as bamboo blinds. These are blinds that I experienced when I was growing up. Grandmother and Grandfather had woven wood blinds installed on their large front porch. They were necessary in order to shade us from the bright western sun, which would shine in our eyes without it. The porch was a welcome retreat in the days before air conditioning or evaporative cooling so we always lowered it late in the afternoon. I grew up with the outdoor woven wood blinds. Woven wood blinds are extremely heavy because they are made from bamboo. These bam... (read more)

9. How Swamp Coolers Work
September 22, 2006

Swamp coolers, or evaporative coolers, are a type of refrigeration system that uses evaporation to cool air, differing from traditional air conditioning which uses a phase change heat pump with a compressor to cool air. Swamp coolers are designed especially for areas that are low-humidity but where the air is hot. Operating a swamp cooler in these areas can be more cost effective than traditional air conditioning. To cool the air, the fan in the swamp cooler brings air from outside through vents in the sides through damp pads. The hot air evaporates the air in the pads which then humidifi... (read more)

10. Evaporative Water Cooler - This Water Cooled Condensing Unit Is No Swamp Cooler
August 15, 2006

This unique cooling technology from Freus, shouldn’t be confused with a swamp cooler. Although water is used to assist with the cooling, it is sprayed over condensing coils rather than pads. The water cooled condensing unit is a residential application of the 250 ton split system chillers already used by commercial buildings. Think of this technology as a mini-chiller for residential use. Evaporative water cooler units for split system air conditioners have a number of advantages over air-cooled units. Water removes heat from the condenser coils far more efficiently than air. This re... (read more)

13. New Invention Ideas
February 04, 2006

A few more new invention ideas. Read about them, laugh at them if you must, modify them, use them and call them your own if you want. Air conditioning shirt. Backpacking in hot weather, I often stop to wet my shirt in a stream. The evaporative cooling as it dries is wonderful. Now if a shirt had little water "tanks" on the shoulders, a shirt could be kept wet and keep cooling for hours, perhaps. They would have to be lightweight, and they would have to release the water slowly. Even better would be tanks with an adjustable rate of flow, so you could have the shirt wetted at the same rate ...
