Many nurses want to continue their education by obtaining their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). A BSN show employers that nurses take their job seriously and enable them to increase their earning potential and opens more employment opportunities. Many hospitals offer tuition reimbursement programs for RN to BSN education in exchange for a promise to work for a specified number of years upon graduation or repay the tuition if the nurse leaves the facility before a specified number of years. While this is an option, many look outside for continuing education aid. There are several options available to Ohio RNs wanting to attend BSN programs in Ohio, both at the federal and state level. Many start by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which is available at www.fafsa.org. Others are applied for directly with the aid sponsor. Direct Stafford Loan These are low interest federal loans for full and part time eligible students that cover expenses. There subsidized and unsubsidized loans. Students must attend school at least half time. The school will review the FAFSA and determine the amount that can be borrowed for either loan. www.fafsa.org American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) A $1,500 scholarship is available to AACN members who wish to obtain their BSN. Students must work in critical care or have worked in critical care for at least one of the last three years and maintain a 3.0 GPA to qualify. www.aacn.org Association of Rehabilitation Nurses Scholarship A $1,000 scholarship is available to those who currently work in rehabilitation nursing or have at least two years experience in rehabilitation nursing and are a member of the Association. www.rehabnurse.org Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program Established by the government to address the nursing shortage, the program requires a minimum commitment of two years to a facility facing a critical nursing shortage. Participants receive 60% of their total qualifying nursing education loan balance for those two years. Participants are entitled to full salary and benefits while in the program and be employed full time at an approved non-profit facility to qualify. www.hrsa.gov Ohio Nurses Foundation The foundation offers three programs. The RN’s Majoring in Nursing Scholarship provides $1,000 annually provided the student attends school full-time. The Rice Memorial Scholarship helps RNs ( looking to complete BSN programs in Ohio) who are cancer survivors or have a close family member with cancer. The Mary Beth Hayward Scholarship is for RNs wishing to teach nursing. The award is $1,000 each year and students must maintain a 3.0 GPA. www.ohnurses.org Financial aid is available to RNs wanting to obtain their BSN. Taking the time to research now can avoid financial headaches later.
