Search Results - Farmer

Type in a word or phrase to search, you can also type in Article ID's separated by commas:

A farmer is a person who raises living organisms for food or raw materials.

The term farmer usually applies to a person who grows field crops, and/or manages orchards or vineyards, or raises livestock or poultry such as chicken and cows. Their products are usually sold in a market or, in a subsistence economy, consumed by the family or pooled by the community.

In some countries, a farmer engaged in raising horses, cattle, or sheep for profit is usually referred to as a rancher (US), grazier (Australia) or stockman. Special terms also apply to other people who husband domesticated animals, namely shepherd for sheep farmers and goatherd for goat farmers. The term dairy farmer is applied to those engaged milk production. A poultry farmer is one who concentrates on raising chickens, turkeys, domesticated ducks and geese, or is involved in egg production. A person who raises a variety of vegetables for market may be called a truck farmer or market gardener.

In the context of developing nations or other pre-industrial cultures, most farmers practice a meager subsistence agriculture – a simple organic farming system employing crop rotation, slash and burn or other techniques to maximize efficiency while meeting the needs of the household or community, using saved seed which is native to the ecoregion. In developed nations however, a person using such techniques on small patches of land might be called a gardener and be considered a hobbyist. Alternatively, one may be driven into such methods by poverty or, ironically--against the background of large-scale agribusiness--may become an organic farmer growing for discerning consumers in the local food market. Historically, one subsisting in this way may have been known as a peasant.

1. The Work That Goes Into A Raw Food Diet For Dogs
November 20, 2009

The largest ingredient in a dog’s diet, about 70 percent, is obviously the meat. People have heard a lot about the dangers of parasites in raw meat. Those dangers are to humans, not to dogs for the reason that dog’s bodies are acidic in their pH balance while ours are alkaline. Dogs digestive systems are also a lot shorter than ours, meaning everything passes through a lot quicker. Dogs are canines, same class as wolves. So if canines were in danger from the parasites in raw meat, the wild would never have produced an adult dog. We always buy their meat from our local supermarket. We... (read more)

3. Success and Achievement Comes to Those Who Never Give Up
November 12, 2009

In the course of my business tour in Kenya, I met a fish farmer who has been extremely successful in this endeavor. He earns not less than a hundred thousand dollars annually from raring and distributing fish to five star hotels in and out of the country. When I asked him about his journey to this successful business, he surprised me by narrating that this business was one of his least attempts to survive, after he was rudely and abruptly retrenched from the company he was working with.He was a foreman in a tea company, when one day, he was shocked to receive a letter of retrenchment. Suddenly... (read more)

November 12, 2009

There are many things in our life that we don't understand before we get some insight into them. Or that the chances of you literally flying through the air after jumping off the top of your playset are pretty much nonexistent. Or that water can actually boil away and leave a burnt mess. We all know the list goes on and on and applies to many things in our lives. Enlightenment is one of those things. Enlightenment or 'waking up' is something that happens when you get an insig... 5. Why You Shouldn't Drink Cow's Milk
November 10, 2009

You might have a wrong notion that using and drinking milk is not against vegetarian principles. We can all picture the farmer pumping the milk manually and it might seem as a natural process which is harmless to the cow. But have you ever really thought about it? Do you have any idea how a cow raised to produce milk lives its life? Like other animals reared for mass consumption, the cow lives in extremely filthy and cramped condititons. It's regularly given hormones to speed up its reproductive processes to obtain milk and offsprings faster. Just as a calf is born, it's separated from it... (read more)

7. The Vegetarian Diet Supports Cruelty To Animals
November 05, 2009

The definition we use for the "vegetarian diet", generally accepted around the world, is a diet that includes fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, nuts, Dairy products, eggs and honey. The Dairy Industry The Dairy industry is inextricably linked to the Beef industry. Unwanted calves, both female and male, are either sent directly to slaughter, as "vealers", or become beef cattle, to be killed later as adults. After a lifetime of service to the dairy farmer, many (if not all) older cows, who are no longer producing as the farmer requires, are also killed for meat. The Dairy cow is forced ... (read more)

19. An Introduction To Commodity Options Trading
October 22, 2009

Commodity futures trading, as we know it today, is said to have originated in Japan in the 17th century, where rice was traded in future contracts. It was a period when farmers and buyers came together and decided to commit to each other future prices negotiated on suitable terms in exchange of grain for money. For example, a dealer would agree to buy a ton of rice at the end of the next month for a certain price from a farmer. This would be ideal for both parties, as the farmer would know how much he would get for his rice in advance, and the buyer could plan to raise the money he needed for ... (read more)
