Are you looking forward to an incredible year – one that excites, energizes, and inspires you? Try these 5 secrets for creating a year that will amaze you! Secret 1: Tie Your Goals to your Vision People who live inspired lives always keep their life vision in mind when they create their goals. It’s easy to get immersed in the daily details of your life. Sometimes you feel like your only goal is to just get through the day. If you’ve ever heard yourself answer the question “How are you?” with, “I’m ok, for a Monday,” you know what I’m talking about! You’ve simply lost sight of your vision. And because of that, you’re not taking steps toward it, and that depletes your energy. What’s your vision for your life? • What kind of a person do you want to be? • What do you want to do? • And what would you like to have? It’s critical that the goals you set this year will help you move closer to that vision. What can you do in each area of your life to live the mission you see for yourself? Secret 2: Make Your Goals Inspiring! There’s a real difference between goals that inspire you to take action and goals that simply aren’t motivating. The words you use could make all the difference. The goals that inspire you contain empowering language. Many people have some sort of weight loss goal. They might create a goal such as, “I will not eat more than 3 carbs a day.” How motivated are you by a goal like that? If you’re like most, a goal that states what you can’t have is not a very inspiring one. A good rule is to avoid any of the following words in your goals: “no,” “not,” “stop,” or “quit.” These words are negative, uninspiring, and un-encouraging. We are very likely to be unsuccessful in accomplishing goals that use these words. Here’s how you might reword the above goal, using empowering language: “I will eat at least 4 servings of protein each day.” Now, instead of saying what you’re not going to do, you’re stating what you will do. And we human beings simply respond more positively to that approach. The secret is to word your goals so they look like something you would actually want to do, instead of reminding you of something you can’t have anymore. Empowering language can make a huge difference. After all, what sounds more fun to you: “Getting healthy,” or “not eating chocolate?” Use terms like, “I will ___________, instead of “I won’t ___________ as you create your goals this year. Secret 3: Make Your Goals Fun! If it’s fun you’re more likely to get it done! People set themselves up for failure when their goals either include things they don’t enjoy, or when they’ve chosen a method that clearly doesn’t fit their style. Suppose that you don’t enjoy reading and one of your goals this year is to learn more about the Law of Attraction. How successful do you think you’ll be if you set the goal of reading two books about the Law of Attraction? Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? Yet I see many people setting themselves up for failure in just this way! Think about how you like to do or learn things when you’re creating your goals. Perhaps you have more fun learning independently than with a group. Or perhaps it’s more enjoyable for you to take a class than read a book. You’ll know you’ve violated this secret if you’re dreading taking action on a goal you’ve set. Change the goal to accommodate your style, and your chance of meeting that goal has just skyrocketed! Ask yourself: “How can I accomplish this goal and have fun at the same time?” Secret 4: Commit to Your Goals How many Hollywood actresses are overweight? Why is this? When an actress is overweight, she doesn’t get work, which means she doesn’t get paid! So actresses actually get paid to be thin. If you had to be a certain weight to get your paycheck, how much more likely would you be to meet that goal? If you can get into the mode of thinking your very livelihood depends on accomplishing your goals, you will reach them! And if your goals are tied to your ultimate life vision (Secret 1), perhaps your livelihood does depend on your meeting them. Here’s another secret I’ve discovered as a coach: People who pay someone to help them reach their goals also accomplish them! They have committed to their goals by putting their money where their mouth is. So one form of commitment is getting paid to reach a goal; another form is to pay someone else. How might you incorporate one of these options into your goals? Paying a coach is an obvious option. Here’s another: hand your accountability partner some money and say “Hold me accountable. If I reach this goal, give the money back, and if I don’t, do something else with it.” How will you include commitment in your goals this year? Secret 5: Inspire Your Year with Learning! As I study people who lead successful and inspiring lives, I notice one thing they all have in common. They love learning, and live in a state of constant self-development. They have coaches and mentors, they attend courses, and they read. We live in a world filled with an abundance of learning resources. What do you need to learn in order to be successful in your goals? Would the support of a coach be helpful for you? Is there a class you need to take? A book you need to read? A mentor who inspires you? If you could learn anything this year, what one thing would most help you achieve your goals? Apply these 5 secrets, and I promise that your year will be one to celebrate and remember!
