3. Botswana Inaugurates New President

Botswana has inaugurated a new president, its fourth since independence 42 years ago. He is Seretse Ian Khama, the son of the country's first president. Correspondent Scott Bobb reports from our Southern Africa Bureau in Johannesburg.
Botswana's fourth president, Seretse Ian Khama, took the oath of office in Gabarone before Chief Justice Julian Nkanono and a large crowd of onlookers.
"I, Seretse Khama Ian Khama, do swear that I will faithfully and diligently discharge my duties and perform my functions in the high office of the president of the Republic of Botswana," he said.

4. Nigerian Militants Threaten More Violence as Court Rejects Bail for Detained Leader

The Nigerian Supreme Court has rejected a request for bail for a jailed Niger Delta militant leader currently facing treason charges. For VOA, Gilbert da Costa in Abuja reports that his supporters have vowed to intensify their violent campaign in the oil-rich region.
A five-man panel of Nigeria's highest court, said it was convinced that militant leader Mujahid Dokubo-Asari is a threat to national security and cannot be granted bail.
The Supreme Court supported earlier decisions by two lower courts to deny Asari bail over security fears.

5. Forum Allows Young People in Africa to Discuss Issues With Leaders

Leaders from several African countries and Germany listened to the concerns of young people from across Africa Saturday. They discussed issues ranging from armed conflicts to democratic participation and the environment during a two-day forum. 6. Southern African Summit Opens With Call For Economic Integration
August 17, 2006
A 14-nation southern Africa summit has opened in Lesotho with calls for the countries to speed up economic integration.
Members of the Southern African Development Community hope to establish a free-trade area by 2008, a customs union by 2010 and a common market by 2015.
But Botswana President Festus Mogae said Thursday that the countries have not shown enough commitment to implementing those plans.
Mr. Mogae is the outgoing chairman of the SADC. He is handing over the post to Lesotho's King Letsie.

7. Nigerian Militia Leader in Court

The leader of the Niger Delta Volunteer Force, Moujahid Dokubo-Asari, has appeared in a Nigerian court to face treason charges. The trial process could be delayed as lawyers argue on issues ranging from bail to the competence of the trial judge.
Dokubo-Asari was again in defiant mood as he made his appearance in court in Abuja. Wearing a black T-shirt with the name of his group, the Niger Delta Volunteer Force, printed on it, the militia leader was escorted by armed policemen.
