3. Controlling Cockroach in the Least Toxic Way
February 12, 2012
Controlling a cockroach infestation is not simply a matter of aesthetics. Large indoor cockroach populations are one of the leading causes of allergies, asthma and other bronchial disorders in humans. Additionally, cockroaches are capable of carrying disease organisms and bacteria on their bodies and in their fecal material. The presence of cockroach populations in and around urban structures is an indication that cockroach food, moisture and harborage resources are present. These conditions allow pests to proliferate and lead to cockroach population explosions.
Until recently, efforts to... (read more)

Precautions When Returning to Your Home

If you smell gas or suspect a leak, turn off the main gas valve, open all windows, and leave the house immediately. February 11, 2012
Any discussion of flood risk involving automobiles is very much a discussion of risk to life. Many web based resources, including numerous pages of the National Weather Service's websites, cover the dangers of driving during flooding. Here is an excerpt from an essay by a Kentucky Army National Guard officer that summarizes the dangers very clearly:

9. Procedure for Drying Out Your Flooded Car
February 11, 2012
Don't wait for the adjuster to arrive. Mold and corrosion are setting in now. You need to clean out as much liquid and mud as you can and dry out your car as soon as possible. Don't try to start the car. If there's water in the engine, transmission or fuel system, you'll just compound the damage.
Disconnect the battery ground strap first-you must do this, otherwise you'll fry something.
Next, begin assessing just how deep the water got. Frankly, if the waterline is as high as the dashboard, you will probably be better off talking the adjuster into totaling the car and getting anoth... (read more)

February 10, 2012
Amongst all the insects public health authorities have to deal with in urban environments, cockroaches occupy an important place. Nowadays cockroach populations appear to have more or less replaced populations of domestic flies as the main domestic urban pests, but their presence in homes and particular on food, elicits similar reactions of disgust and aversion. "Equally important as disease carriers are flies and roaches" -- this quotation from a 1952 U.S. Public Health Service publication and reported by Roth and Willis (1) is still true.
