A Fortress is a type of fortification designed for permanent defense in warfare and as a military base . The term derives from the Latin fortis ("strong"). Unlike other fortifications which complement the functions of a building (castles to protect the feudal residence, fortified churches to have a shelter place to the community), the fortress have a military function to serve as permanent base of a military detachment. Furthermore, when one speaks about "fortress", means an impregnable and inaccessible place with the military technology of that moment. So, a Roman castrum, or a medieval castle were considered fortresses at the time they were built and lose this consideration when military technology evolves.
