Marketing a commercial message directly to a group of people with the help of Email is called Email Marketing. In other words, every mail sent out to a potential or existing customer is technically an Email Marketing. Email Marketing generally consist of sending out ads, request business, or solicit sales or donations, and is meant to build loyalty, trust, or brand awareness. Email marketing is applicable to both cold list and existing customer database.

In a broader sense, Email Marketing usually refer to:

Sending out email messages with an intention to enhance the relationship of a business with its existing or prior customers, in order to encourage repeat business and customer loyalty.

To acquire new customers or retain existing customers to buy something at the earliest.

Promoting other companies by attaching their advertisements with the email messages.

Reduced Time & Effort:

Going by the conventional method of conducting campaigns for direct-to-consumer or direct business-to-business such as Print Postal Mailings or Telesales Campaigns will consume a considerable amount of time and effort. But with the help of Email marketing the objective of the campaign can be achieved at much lesser time, effort and expenditure.

Real-Time Messages

Email marketing can deliver real time messages as it does not take a very long time for preparing the campaign. With telesales campaign or print mailer marketing campaigns and specials needs to be selected that has got "long tail" because of the extended period of time between campaign development and its implementation. On the other hand a marketing email can be completed in just a few hours, which can then be literally send "day-of" messages to help reduce stock or promote a limited time special as needed. Emails also gives the liberation to send special real time messages to the customers on special occasions such as their anniversaries, birthdays etc.

Personalize Messages

Email help personalize the messages as per each customer. Unlike other mode of campaigns it need not follow the rule of "one-size-fits-all". Personalized email option also helps companies mail the purchase invoice, sales history etc., onto their customer's email account registered with the company. While sending a bulk email, the company can also segregate the mail based on the categories of their customers. This option is most useful for a company while sending an extremely targeted marketing campaigns that will result in increased sales conversions simply because they are so specific. Information Spreading Spreading a useful message becomes very convenient and effective with an email. All that a sender have to do is look for the information online, copy the same or the link of that page, include it with the massage and send it across instantly.

Reduce Overhead Costs Since there are no charges applicable in composing and sending an email (other than the hosting charge, if a corporate email), it becomes quite cost effective way of campaigning or serving any other purpose. Exponentially Better Ability to Track Sales and User Engagement

There cannot be any better means to draw precise and usable tracking information to help the sender figure out what's successful and what's not than email marketing. With the help of latest technological advancement in email system, one can track the information on how many people opened an email, how many people clicked a link in an email, which specific link within the email was clicked, how many people complained that an email was spam or unsubscribe and, of course, whether the email even made it into the recipient's inbox or not.
