Dikarya (inc. Deuteromycota) Subphyla Incertae sedis A fungus (pronounced /'f??g?s/) is any member of a large group of eukaryotic organisms that includes microorganisms such as yeasts and molds, as well as the more familiar mushrooms. The Fungi (pronounced /'f?nd?a?/ or /'f??ga?/) are classified as a kingdom that is separate from plants, animals and bacteria. One major difference is that fungal cells have cell walls that contain chitin, unlike the cell walls of plants, which contain cellulose. These and other differences show that the fungi form a single group of related organisms, named the Eumycota (true fungi or Eumycetes), that share a common ancestor (a monophyletic group). This fungal group is distinct from the structurally similar slime molds (myxomycetes) and water molds (oomycetes). The discipline of biology devoted to the study of fungi is known as mycology, which is often regarded as a branch of botany, even though genetic studies have shown that fungi are more closely related to animals than to plants. Abundant worldwide, most fungi are inconspicuous because of the small size of their structures, and their cryptic lifestyles in soil, on dead matter, and as symbionts of plants, animals, or other fungi. They may become noticeable when fruiting, either as mushrooms or molds. Fungi perform an essential role in the decomposition of organic matter and have fundamental roles in nutrient cycling and exchange. They have long been used as a direct source of food, such as mushrooms and truffles, as a leavening agent for bread, and in fermentation of various food products, such as wine, beer, and soy sauce. Since the 1940s, fungi have been used for the production of antibiotics, and, more recently, various enzymes produced by fungi are used industrially and in detergents. Fungi are also used as biological agents to control weeds and pests. Many species produce bioactive compounds called mycotoxins, such as alkaloids and polyketides, that are toxic to animals including humans. The fruiting structures of a few species contain psychotropic compounds and are consumed recreationally or in traditional ceremonies. Fungi can break down manufactured materials and buildings, and become significant pathogens of humans and other animals. Losses of crops due to fungal diseases (e.g. rice blast disease) or food spoilage can have a large impact on human food supplies and local economies.

3. How To Cure Yeast Infection? Here Are 3 Ways
November 16, 2009
Learning how to cure yeast infection has to start with knowing what the causes are.
Why?
Basically, because knowledge is power. There are several causes of yeast infection, and you can reduce your chances of getting an infection if you know what those causes are. But if you aren't aware of the causes, your chances of getting an infection are much higher.
But before we get into the causes of yeast infection, let's define what a yeast infection is. And to do that, you have to know a little about fungi (the plural of fungus).
Fungi are rather weird microscopic creatures invisible to t... (read more)

4. Using Resvinatrol To Fight Diabetes Today
November 13, 2009
Resveratrol is not new, scientists have been studying its effects for many years. Resveratrol is known for its ability to protect plants from bacteria and fungi, while previous research has also found it helps prevent the negative effects of high-calorie diets and has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer potential. As a cancer preventer, resveratrol is most effective in studies when it comes in direct contact with the cancer, such as skin cancer or gastrointestinal tumors. If you do drink, switching to red wine might be a healthier option than other forms of alcohol, but if you don't drink, resve... (read more)

5. Ringworm Cures
November 10, 2009
What is Ringworm? Ringworm is a fungal illness. It is a group of transferable diseases of the skin, hair or nails of humans, it is noticeable, and it is indeed not so engaging to have a look at. On the contrary, many of us tend to suspect that it is caused by a worm. Fungi are tiny minute organisms that thrive on the dead skin. This is the reason why when one acquires the infection, the outer layer of the skin loses its normalcy and turns into a red-like color, around the area affected. The skin condition will be seen to be common in warm and humid areas. There are areas of the skin t... (read more)

All life forms strategize to survive and procreate. Weeds worms, birds, fungi and bacteria all work to sustain their own lives on this planet. In fact, we humans survive because of the biological games constantly unfolding in our mist. Propionibacterium acnes, or p acne bacteria, are no different. They want and need to survive. Skin bacteria perform an important function. Bacteria use the secretions of our sweat and sebaceous glands (sebum is the oil that makes our skin look shiny) as nutrients. 15. Root Cause of Dry Rot and Its Treatment
October 14, 2009
When timber and other wooden materials decay due to certain microbes such as fungi, it is called dry rot. A fungus, SERPULA LACRYMANS, causes dry rot. Another fungus, Meruliporia Incrassata, also causes dry rot. It is a very common problem in United Kingdom and North America. The fungus removes cellulose from the timber which later causes wooden structures like houses to collapse. The fungi need a good moisture content to establish itself on the timber and then destroy it. In older times, it was referred to as brown rot. Dry Rot was a very common problem for ships during that time. Enormous am... (read more)

25. Fairy Rings: There's nothing magical about them
October 02, 2009
For hundreds of years, superstitious Europeans thought fairy rings were caused by dancing leprechauns. Alas, fairy rings are actually caused by fungi that create halos of fast-growing, deep green grass that eventually turn brown and fill with mushrooms, leaving dead grass roots just below the soil line.
More than 50 species of ring-shaped fungi have been identified as plaguing under-watered and under-fertilized lawns. Ring-causing fungi can sink as deep as four feet into the soil (though usually only about 20 inches), spreading a network of mycelium spores completely across your lawn. ... (read more)
