A garden is a planned space, usually outdoors, set aside for the display, cultivation, and enjoyment of plants and other forms of nature. The garden can incorporate both natural and man-made materials. The most common form is known as a residential garden. Western gardens are almost universally based around plants. Zoos, which display wild animals in simulated natural habitats, were formerly called zoological gardens. [1][2]The etymology of the word refers to enclosure it is from Middle English gardin, from Anglo-French gardin, jardin, of Germanic origin; akin to Old High German gart, an enclosure. [3] The words yard, court, and Latin hortus (meaning "garden," hence horticulture and orchard), are cognates-- all referring to an enclosed space. [4] The term "garden" in British English refers to an enclosed area of land, usually adjoining a building.[5] This would be referred to as a yard in American English. Some traditional types of eastern gardens, such as Zen gardens, use plants such as parsley. Xeriscape gardens use local native plants that do not require irrigation or extensive use of other resources while still providing the benefits of a garden environment. Gardens may exhibit structural enhancements, sometimes called follies, including water features such as fountains, ponds (with or without fish), waterfalls or creeks, dry creek beds, statuary, arbors, trellises and more.

12. Bethlehem - Is it the True Manger of Christ?
November 06, 2009
We arrived in the Holy Land after a ten hour bus ride and two weeks in Egypt. We left most of our Astara tour of 100 people. Twenty two of us stayed on to visit Jerusalem. I really didn't understand the politics of the region until I got there. We had a Palestinian tour guide and so we were to stay in "occupied territory." This territory was actually the Mount of Olives where Jesus ascended into heaven and where he suffered alone in the Garden of Gethsemane. Those 2000 year old olive trees still produce olives. Before I left on the trip my Israeli friend told me that we must be stayi... (read more)

14. Transplanting Roses Successfully
November 05, 2009
It may be obvious to state, but transplanting a rose bush requires that you first dig it up. Unlike planting a rose, which you will only take delivery of, during the appropriate time of year, transplanting a rose from one area of your garden to another is left to your own good judgement. You can dig up a rose, as indeed, you can dig up any plant, with the intention of transplanting it, but to maximise your chances of success, you would sensibly only attempt this task during the plant’s dormant season, sometime between late fall and mid spring.
The method I outline here is a lot of work... (read more)
