Geometry ( Ancient Greek ?e?µet??a; geo = earth, metria = measure) is a part of mathematics concerned with questions of size, shape, relative position of figures and with properties of space. Geometry is one of the oldest sciences. Initially a body of practical knowledge concerning lengths, areas, and volumes, in the third century BC geometry was put into an axiomatic form by Euclid, whose treatment— Euclidean geometry—set a standard for many centuries to follow. The field of astronomy, especially mapping the positions of the stars and planets on the celestial sphere, served as an important source of geometric problems during the next one and a half millennia. A mathematician who works in the field of geometry is called a geometer. Introduction of coordinates by René Descartes and the concurrent development of algebra marked a new stage for geometry, since geometric figures, such as plane curves, could now be represented analytically, i.e., with functions and equations. This played a key role in the emergence of calculus in the 17th century. Furthermore, the theory of perspective showed that there is more to geometry than just the metric properties of figures. The subject of geometry was further enriched by the study of intrinsic structure of geometric objects that originated with Euler and Gauss and led to the creation of topology and differential geometry. Since the 19th century discovery of non-Euclidean geometry, the concept of space has undergone a radical transformation. Contemporary geometry considers manifolds, spaces that are considerably more abstract than the familiar Euclidean space, which they only approximately resemble at small scales. These spaces may be endowed with additional structure, allowing one to speak about length. Modern geometry has multiple strong bonds with physics, exemplified by the ties between Riemannian geometry and general relativity. One of the youngest physical theories, string theory, is also very geometric in flavour. The visual nature of geometry makes it initially more accessible than other parts of mathematics, such as algebra or number theory. However, the geometric language is also used in contexts that are far removed from its traditional, Euclidean provenance, for example, in fractal geometry, and especially in algebraic geometry.[1]

1. The World Peace Religion our Iraq Afghanistan War Exit Strategy
November 16, 2009
Do you remember the reasons we got into Iraq? Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away, now it looks as though we’re there to stay, Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Yesterday there was no 9/11. Yesterday there was no Iraq. Yesterday there was no Afghanistan. Nobody in the United States even knew where Afghanistan was. We thought that an Afghan was a beautiful dog with silky hair and a long narrow head or a soft shawl crocheted in a geometric design. Those were the days my friend, we thought they’d never end, we’d sing and dance, forever and a day, we’d live the life we’d choose, we’d figh... (read more)

3. Behind The Many Lines Of A Bar Code
November 12, 2009
By definition, a “bar code” is optical data which can be read by the scanning device of bar code equipment, which is then interpreted by software. Earlier bar codes used to come in the form of parallel black lines called linear or one-dimensional bar codes. Today, however, bar coding equipment can read all sorts of patterns, such as squares, dots, hexagons or other geometric patterns called two-dimensional matrix codes; and though these symbols are not bars, they are still referred to as bar codes.
The first bar code equipment was used in supermarket and retail stores to automate their ch... (read more)

16. Preliminary Metamorphosis and The Child
October 01, 2009
When I was a little child (though slightly older than a toddler), so little in awareness that I have had no measurable knowledge of good or of evil, except for a very costly lesson which I learnt when I poked the forefinger of my right hand into fire which my mother had made to smoke (dry) some errings, I used to draw intelligible geometric patterns in my father's loose stationery, albeit intuitively. At about this time my father was a student at The Teachers Training College learning how to impart the rudiments of fundamental knowledge to small boys and girls. What was more - on graduation, h...
