Geometry ( Ancient Greek ?e?µet??a; geo = earth, metria = measure) is a part of mathematics concerned with questions of size, shape, relative position of figures and with properties of space. Geometry is one of the oldest sciences. Initially a body of practical knowledge concerning lengths, areas, and volumes, in the 3rd century BC geometry was put into an axiomatic form by Euclid, whose treatment— Euclidean geometry—set a standard for many centuries to follow. The field of astronomy, especially mapping the positions of the stars and planets on the celestial sphere, served as an important source of geometric problems during the next one and a half millennia. A mathematician who works in the field of geometry is called a geometer. Introduction of coordinates by René Descartes and the concurrent development of algebra marked a new stage for geometry, since geometric figures, such as plane curves, could now be represented analytically, i.e., with functions and equations. This played a key role in the emergence of calculus in the 17th century. Furthermore, the theory of perspective showed that there is more to geometry than just the metric properties of figures. The subject of geometry was further enriched by the study of intrinsic structure of geometric objects that originated with Euler and Gauss and led to the creation of topology and differential geometry. Since the 19th-century discovery of non-Euclidean geometry, the concept of space has undergone a radical transformation. Contemporary geometry considers manifolds, spaces that are considerably more abstract than the familiar Euclidean space, which they only approximately resemble at small scales. These spaces may be endowed with additional structure, allowing one to speak about length. Modern geometry has multiple strong bonds with physics, exemplified by the ties between Riemannian geometry and general relativity. One of the youngest physical theories, string theory, is also very geometric in flavour. The visual nature of geometry makes it initially more accessible than other parts of mathematics, such as algebra or number theory. However, the geometric language is also used in contexts that are far removed from its traditional, Euclidean provenance, for example, in fractal geometry, and especially in algebraic geometry.[1]

5. Teaching the Coordinate Grid
October 17, 2009
Teaching students about the coordinate grid is one thing. Getting them to remember the order in which coordinate points are plotted is another thing. The key to having the students remember is practice, practice, and then more practice. This is not likely to happen unless you can keep the students engaged. One thing that will help do this is a coordinate grid application. Only afterwards you can try some of the online math games and develop other important abilities.
As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. If that is the case, then a coordinate grid application is wo... (read more)

22. The Incredible Secret of Sacred Geometry: What makes it sacred, and what does that cause?
August 07, 2009
Sacred geometry is a term that is used to describe a type of geometry that is based on proportions or ratios that are found throughout nature and the universe, thus enabling mathematicians to figure out the laws or formulas that come from these "hidden codes within nature." These codes are then often called golden, as in golden rectangle or golden spiral. Golden means that these shapes are based on universal proportions, which are summed up under a mathematical term called the golden ratio of phi. So with these phi proportions in hand, one can easily build furniture, houses, buildings, temples... (read more)

23. Surveying the History of Land and Geometry
August 05, 2009
Our history of land surveys extends back to the time of the Egyptians. They used simple geometry to survey and construct structures like the pyramids. A modern day property survey was used by the Egyptians to figure out the foundation and boundaries they could exclaim to build the pyramids.
Maps or blue prints are drawn when doing land surveys. Just as the Egyptians used hieroglyphics to map out statues and buildings, we use the same basic mapping when surveying. Think about how much time and surveying needed to give us an Atlas. In the 1500’s an Atlas was created by combining maps that ... (read more)

One of the first books to deal with modern accounting was first published in Venice in 1494. It was written by Luca Pacioli. It was called Review of Arithmetic, Geometry, Ratio and Proportion. In it there was a lengthy discourse on bookkeeping. This section was called Details of Accounting and Recording. Merchants were the ones who really used such a book. It's interesting that it is the first known record of a lengthy discourse on the subject.
