Germany (pronounced /'d??rm?ni/&_160;( listen)), officially the Federal Republic of Germany ( German Bundesrepublik Deutschland, pronounced&_160;['b?nd?s?epu?bli?k 'd??t?lant]&_160; ( listen)), [5] is a country in Central Europe. It is bordered to the north by the North Sea, Denmark, and the Baltic Sea; to the east by Poland and the Czech Republic; to the south by Austria and Switzerland; and to the west by France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The territory of Germany covers 357,021&_160;square kilometers (137,847&_160;sq&_160;mi) and is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. With 82 million inhabitants, it accounts for the largest population among the member states of the European Union and is home to the third-largest number of international migrants worldwide. [6]A region named Germania inhabited by several Germanic peoples has been known and documented before AD 100. Beginning in the 10th century, German territories formed a central part of the Holy Roman Empire that lasted until 1806. During the 16th century, northern Germany became the centre of the Protestant Reformation. As a modern nation-state, the country was first unified amidst the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. In 1949, after World War II, Germany was divided into two separate states—East Germany and West Germany—along the lines of Allied occupation.[7] The two states were unified in 1990. West Germany was a founding member of the European Community (EC) in 1957, which became the European Union in 1993. It is part of the Schengen zone and adopted the European currency, the euro, in 1999. Germany is a federal parliamentary republic of sixteen states (Länder). The capital and largest city is Berlin. Germany is a member of the United Nations, NATO, G8, G20 and the OECD. It is a major power with the world's fourth largest economy by nominal GDP and the fifth largest in purchasing power parity. It is the largest economy in the EU and the world's largest exporter and second largest importer of goods. In absolute terms, Germany allocates the second biggest annual budget of development aid in the world,[8] while its military expenditure ranked sixth.[9] The country has developed a high standard of living and established a comprehensive system of social security. It holds a key position in European affairs and maintains a multitude of close partnerships on a global level.[10] Germany is recognised as a scientific and technological leader in several fields.[11] The English word "Germany" derives from Latin name Germania. The name "Germania" came into use after Julius Caesar adopted it from a Gallic term for the peoples east of the Rhine that probably meant "neighbor".[12][13]

3. Hungarian Wine - An Overview
November 06, 2009
There's a thing about the Hungarians - these days they like to keep their wine to themselves (only a fifth of their wines are exported). Interesting when you consider that under communist rule in the early 1980's Hungary was the principle Central European wine exporter, shipping out over 60% of their wine production (mostly to the USSR and Eastern Germany). These days, Hungary has about 315,000 acres under vine, scattered throughout the country everywhere except the far South East. Since the fall of communism in 1989, considerable investment has come in from the west (notably from Germany, ... (read more)

6. A Closer Look at Japanese and German Exporters
November 05, 2009
With the euro down nearly 15% this year and at a two-year low against the U.S. dollar, the world's largest exporting nation is worth a good look. The top lines at leading German industrial companies are rolling in with impressive numbers for an almost zero-growth economy. Quarterly sales at Siemens rose 13%, the fastest since 2003. BMW's sales rose by 11% in the third quarter, although high raw-material cost... (read more)

16. A bit of history related to the discovery of polystyrene
November 03, 2009
History of Polystyrene foam: Polystyrene was accidentally discovered in 1839 by Eduard Simon; an apothecary in Berlin, Germany. From storax, the resin of Liquidambar orientalis, he distilled an oily substance, a monomer that he named styrol. Several days later Simon found that the styrol had thickened, presumably due to oxidation, into a jelly he dubbed styrol oxide ("Styroloxyd"). By 1845 English chemist John Blyth and German chemist August Wilhelm von Hofmann showed that the same transformation of styrol took place in the absence of oxygen.
