SymphalangusAlso called the lesser apes, gibbons differ from great apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangutans and humans) in being smaller and (other than most humans) pair-bonded, in not making nests, and in certain anatomical details in which they superficially more closely resemble monkeys than great apes do. Gibbons are masters of their primary mode of locomotion, brachiation, swinging from branch to branch for distances of up to 15 m (50 ft), at speeds as high as 56&_160;km/h (35 mph). They can also make leaps of up to 8 m (27 ft), and walk bipedally with their arms raised for balance. They are the fastest and most agile of all tree-dwelling, non-flying mammals.[4] Depending on species and gender, gibbons' fur coloration varies from dark to light brown shades, and anywhere in between black and white. It is rare to see a completely white gibbon. One unique aspect of gibbon physiology is that the wrist is composed of a ball and socket joint, allowing for biaxial movement. This greatly reduces the amount of energy needed in the upper arm and torso, while also reducing stress on the shoulder joint. They also have long hands and feet, with a deep cleft between the first and second digits of their hands. Their fur is usually black, gray, or brownish, often with white markings on hands, feet, and face. Some species have an enlarged throat sac, which inflates and serves as a resonating chamber when the animals call. This structure is enormous in a few species, equaling the size of the animal's head.

1. How to Prevent the Myth of Linear History From Distorting Your Thinking
May 04, 2009
When Edward Gibbon set out to write "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" in the year 1769, his goal was to demonstrate that, in History, civilization often moves backwards as time advances. Reading Gibbon's work is the best foundation for understanding current problems and the most effective vaccine against delusion.
"In the Dark Ages, ancient statutes were broken and melted by unfeeling avarice," noted Gibbon. "The soul of the geniuses who had shaped them evaporated in smoke. The cost and labour of centuries were consumed in a moment. Of the writings of Antiquity that still existed... (read more)

5. Watchmen: A Deconstructed Graphic Novel
December 17, 2008
Watchmen was published in an era when the comic book genre was dominated by superheroes and antiheroes with black and white views about good and evil. It is a parody of the overman in dystopia. A combination of dark, pulp, and deconstructed comic book style, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon offered something that caters to both comic book aficionados and common readers.
Watchmen is not your typical graphic novel. It defies all other conventions in the comic book genre and deviates from the usual larger-than-life comic book characters we have come to know. Instead of an alien from Krypton or a ... (read more)

7. You Say "Tomato," I Say "Deadly Poison"
September 21, 2007
Legend has it that a hardy Colonel named Robert Gibbon Johnson, tired of his superstitious and uninformed countrymen’s refusal to touch or eat tomatoes, sat in front of the Salem, New Jersey Courthouse with a basket full of the little red fruits. To the shock, horror, and eventual awe of the 2,000 person crowd, he consumed every last tomato without dropping dead.
Of course this isn’t true, nor are any other claims of American leeriness of tomato consumption. But there are plenty of foods we don’t eat because we think they’re bad for us when in reality they’re not. Let’s take a trip down m... (read more)
