A glacier is a large, slow-moving river of ice, formed from compacted layers of snow, that slowly deforms and flows in response to gravity and high pressure. The processes and landforms caused by glaciers and related to them are glacial ( adjective); this term should not be confounded with glacial ( noun), a cold period in ice ages (see glacial period). The process of glacier growth and establishment is called glaciation. The word glacier comes from French via the Vulgar Latin glacia, and ultimately from Latin glacies meaning ice.[1] Glacier ice is the largest reservoir of fresh water on Earth, and second only to oceans as the largest reservoir of total water. Glaciers cover vast areas of polar regions but are restricted to the highest mountains in the tropics. Many geomorphological processes are interrupted or modified significantly by glaciers. Geomorphological features created by glaciers include end, lateral, ground and medial moraines that form from glacially transported rocks and debris; U-shaped valleys and cirques at their heads, and the glacier fringe, which is the area where the glacier has recently melted into water. Much precipitation becomes trapped in the glaciers instead of flowing immediately back to the oceans, causing sea level drops and greatly modifying the hydrology of streams. The Earth's crust is pushed down by the weight of the ice, and meltwater commonly collects and forms lakes along the ice margins.

1. Moelltal Glacier Ski Resort: Romance at the Summit
October 02, 2008
This is not a mountain slope skiing resort. It is not an Alps skiing resort. It is a glacier skiing resort in which snow cover is complemented by another glacier, the Stubai. This means that during winter, the almost 6 miles of ski runs will have an excellent cover of snow, as well as six feet of snow base. But the snow cover, the snow base, and their pristine white landscape are not the reasons why the new ski resort of Moelltal Glacier is considered a very romantic ski resort. The romance is found at the summit.
The summit of the new ski resort of Moelltal Glacier is located at about 2 ... (read more)

2. Les 2 Alpes, France: From Schools To Slopes
September 22, 2008
Les 2 Alpes translates in English as The Two Alps; however, the "2" here refers to the two smaller towns to the north and south, Mont De Lans and Venosc. Les 2 Alpes is popular for two reasons: 1) It is lucky enough to have Europe's largest glacier, Mont-de-Lans. It is ski-friendly because it provides open spaces for skiers. 2) Les 2 Alpes comes second to Chamonix as France's oldest ski resorts. Just because it comes as a close second, however, shouldn't take away from its grandeur.

July 12, 2008
At nearly one and a half million acres Glacier National Park in Montana is impressive and boasts over 200 lakes and streams, 50 glaciers and more than 700 miles of wonderful hiking trails. These numbers are impressive, but they do not even start to convey the breathtaking beauty of this national park.
They do not begin to describe how the mountains around Lake MacDonald glow pink in the setting sun and almost force you to stand transfixed to this view until darkness falls. Neither do they describe the huge field of tall bear grass stalks with their white flowers which simply shout at you ... (read more)

8. Learn About the Water Purification Process
July 02, 2008
The water purification process used by a treatment facility varies. In order to explain water purification in its entirety, visual aids are helpful, but as with many other scientific procedures, you can think of it as a circle. Where to begin on that circle is difficult to decide.
Let's start with a brief explanation of why we need a water purification process. In old movies, you would see a cowboy fill his canteen from a mountain stream. The stream could have been fed by a glacier, a spring or other groundwater, as well as regular rains. There were far less people and far fewer environm... (read more)

March 17, 2008
When you receive the Seal you will see climate change as the coming End-times. You will be interested to learn how glaciers all around the world are quickly melting, threatening calamity for billions of people.
One of the biggest problems with the melting of the glaciers is the long-term problem of water supply. Many people in the world get their fresh water from glaciers which store up water from snow like a bank and dispense it when it melts.
But the glaciers are melting too fast now, and many of them will be completely gone within decades. Few glaciers will remain at the ... (read more)

18. Tobogganing. Just like the old grey mare, she ain't what she used to be.
March 24, 2008
Tobogganing, now called Bobsledding. The word conjures up memories of colorful, sleek, racing machines, speeding at breakneck speed down a high-banked icy bobsled run. The team members pushing for all their might to get it started, and disappearing inside like peas in a pod in reverse. Timers splitting a second into hundreds of parts.
Irma and I are old enough to remember another kind of tobogganing. Ours took place back when we were youngsters. Before television came along to take the fun out of it. This was before we had met. Before computers, cell phones, wifi, satellites, space shutt... (read more)

19. Wedgemount Lake near Whistler, BC. You had better be in good condition.
March 24, 2008
Wedgemount Lake is a gem set in spectacular rugged mountains and fed by a huge glacier. Not for the light-hearted, you must be in good physical condition to tackle this hike. The elevation gain is 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) and since the distance from the trailhead to the lake is 7km (4.2 miles) the trail is going to be steep. Better to heed our advice and take easier trails.
Trail access
Turn right off Hwy 99, 13 km north of Whistler. You must cross the BC Rail train track to access the road. Use must use extreme caution as this is an uncontrolled railway crossing. The parking lot i... (read more)
