&_160;Ukraine[6]Greek has been spoken in the Balkan Peninsula since around the late 3rd millennium BC. The earliest written evidence is found in the Linear B clay tablets in the "Room of the Chariot Tablets", an LMIII A-context (c. 1400 BC) region of Knossos, in Crete, making Greek one of the world's oldest recorded living languages. Among the Indo-European languages, its date of earliest attestation is matched only by Vedic Sanskrit and the Anatolian languages. The later Greek alphabet (unrelated to Linear B) is derived from the Phoenician alphabet (abjad); with minor modifications, it is still used today. The Greek language is conventionally divided into the following periods The tradition of diglossia, the simultaneous existence of vernacular and archaizing written forms of Greek, was renewed in the modern era in the form of a polarization between two competing varieties Dimotiki, the vernacular form of Modern Greek proper, and Katharevousa, meaning 'purified', an imitation of classical Greek, which was developed in the early 19th century and used for literary, juridic, administrative and scientific purposes in the newly formed modern Greek state. The diglossia problem was brought to an end in 1976 (Law 306/1976), when Dimotikí was declared the official language of Greece and it is still in use for all official purposes and in education, having incorporated features of Katharevousa and giving birth to Standard Greek.

The Greek words used in the New Testament for tongues, when used in relation to speaking, simply meant “language”. The Greek “glossa” means “tongue, language,” and the verb “laleo” means “to speak”, producing the word “glossolalia”. This always refered to an earthly or known language.
There is only one verse in the Bible that mentions the tongues of angels. It is 1 Corinthians 13:1(KJV) “Though I speak with the to... (read more)

The Russian language is the most commonly spoken language in Europe. It is a Slavic language whose roots can be traced to Sanskrit, Greek, and Latin. Though not as internationally prominent as its days as the official language of the former Soviet Union, it is still the official language of such countries as Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. September 21, 2009
The stamp collection mania occurred shortly after the first stamps were used for mailing letters. The first official name for the hobby was timbromania, derived from the French word timbre, meaning stamp. It was 1864 when the word philately, a Greek term which means love for tax-free things, was coined. And it became the official term for the hobby up to the present.
However, there came a time that philatelists seem to be unrecognized and silenced especially in the United States. The hobby of collecting stamps seemed to be uncommon to Americans. Then came President Franklin Delano Roosev... (read more)

8. Troubled with Bindi in Hindi?
August 27, 2009
"Namaskar! Lekh ke prarambh mein lekhak ka abhivaadan sweekar karein". If all of this seems Greek to you, then may I take the opportunity of saying that it’s Hindi. And all those big, heavy words mean that ‘yours truly’ sends a warm “hello” to you.
I won’t blame you if you were not able to comprehend that, for it was a deliberate attempt to start off with Shudh Hindi (the scholarly one, you know!). As every other language, Hindi too has its many versions where language often gets transformed into dialects.
The colloquial Hindi language is not difficult to learn, thou... (read more)

The Apostle Paul, writing to the Philippian church, declared, Now you Philippians know also that in the start of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. Due to the seeds the Philippian Christians sowed again and again, God said he would... (read more)
