Search Results - Heat convection

Type in a word or phrase to search, you can also type in Article ID's separated by commas:

Convection in the most general terms refers to the movement of molecules within fluids (i.e. liquids, gases and rheids). Convection is one of the major modes of heat transfer and mass transfer. In fluids, convective heat and mass transfer take place through both diffusion – the random Brownian motion of individual particles in the fluid – and by advection, in which matter or heat is transported by the larger-scale motion of currents in the fluid. In the context of heat and mass transfer, the term "convection" is used to refer to the sum of advective and diffusive transfer.[1]

A common use of the term convection leaves out the word "heat" but nevertheless refers to heat convection that is, the case in which heat is the entity of interest being advected (carried), and diffused (dispersed).

As convection is dependent on the bulk movement of a fluid it can only occur in liquids, gases and multiphase mixtures.

Convective heat transfer is split into two categories natural (or free) convection and forced (or advective) convection, also known as heat advection.

1. Keep Warm & Cozy With Space Heaters
November 12, 2009

here. These two types are the most common, just remember that there are many types but this article is mostly about Convection Heaters.Convectionheaters are more effective in heating entire roomsthan Radiant Heaters. Both of the these two types of Space Heaters are great, they just work in different ways. Convection heaters, warms the air in the roomand everything in the surrounding area. As radiant Heaters heat objects in front and near it,this makes radiant heaters faster for direct heat. How would you like to shut off the heater and still remain warm for a lot longer than you can with a radia... (read more)

2. Introduction to Plastic Welding
November 11, 2009

Plastic welding and spot welding – both are almost similar to each other. There is a difference noted. In plastic welding, heat is supplied through convection of the pincher tips, instead of conduction. The two plastic pieces are brought together. At the time of welding, a jet of hot air is liberated. This melts the parts to be joined along with the plastic filler rod. As the rod starts melting, it is forced into the joint and causes the fusion of the parts. Plastic identification is the first point to be noted in order to choose a suitable plastic welding rod. A plastic welding rod or ... (read more)

3. How Quartz Infrared Heaters work?
November 06, 2009

Versus infrared heaters Most heaters work by heating the air directly. The central air ovens, steam radiators and many portable heaters or blow hot air into the room or to warm the air around them and let the convection currents circulate air around . Infrared heaters are different. Instead of heating the air, they warm objects in the room directly. The heating element Infrared Heaters Quartz are driven by an electric element - usually a tungsten wire - inside a tube made of clear quartz crystal. A powerful electric current in the wire, heating it up. The pitfalls of crystal qua... (read more)

4. Reasons Why Oil Filled Radiators Are An Absolute Must For Winter
October 14, 2009

Everyone dreads the forthcoming winter season. As we dig out our winter gloves, and bring out the holiday decorations many of us are debating replacing our old heaters with something more efficient. This debate is often settled by oil filled radiators. These are a safer, cleaner, cheaper alternative heating source to our old electric heaters. Oil filled radiators heat through means of convection. What this means is that as the air flows over aluminum fins it is heated, and then goes on its way. The fins are heated by oil that is circulated through the radiator. When it gets cooled off eno... (read more)

6. New Conduction-Cooled ATR 6U VPX Platform from Elma Provides Exceptional Thermal Performance
August 19, 2009

FREMONT, Calif., August 2009 –Elma Electronic Inc.’s Systems division announced today the new conduction-cooled ATR 6U VPX platform that provides the highest level of environmental protection while also allowing for optimal cooling that convection-cooled platforms cannot offer. Elma’s conduction-cooled ATRs feature a machined card cage that accommodates wedge locks to transfer heat from the boards to the machined platform walls within the integrated card guides. Special grade aluminum joined by a dip-braising process for the chassis parts ensures the best conductivity of the payload. ... (read more)

7. Air Conditioning manual
August 06, 2009

Air conditioning and refrigeration are provided through the removal of heat. The definition of cold is the absence of heat and all air conditioning systems work on this basic principle. Heat can be removed through the process of radiation, convection, and conduction using mediums such as water, air, ice, and chemicals referred to as refrigerants. In order to remove heat from something, you simply need to provide a medium that is colder—this is how all air conditioning and refrigeration systems work. An air conditioning system, or a standalone air conditioner, provides cooling, ventilation... (read more)

9. Which radiator?
July 16, 2009

Radiators are actually somewhat mis-titled. The majority o the heat that comes from your radiator system is delivered via convection rather than radiating straight out into the room. Your radiators work by passing hot water through the system, and as any cool air circulates past the system, it is heated and distributed round your room via convection currents. For this reason radiators require a good amount of space with which to attract, heat and circulate air. This is why the positioning of radiators is so important, and why you will always see radiators mounted away from the wall and ... (read more)
