Helium ( He) is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, inert monatomic chemical element that heads the noble gas group in the periodic table and whose atomic number is 2. Its boiling and melting points are the lowest among the elements and it exists only as a gas except in extreme conditions. An unknown yellow spectral line signature in light was first observed from a solar eclipse in 1868 by French astronomer Pierre Janssen who is jointly credited with the discovery of the element with Norman Lockyer who observed the same eclipse and was the first to propose this was a new element which he named helium. In 1903, large reserves of helium were found in the natural gas fields of the United States, which is by far the largest supplier of the gas. The substance is used in cryogenics, in deep-sea breathing systems, to cool superconducting magnets, in helium dating, for inflating balloons, for providing lift in airships and as a protective gas for many industrial uses (such as arc welding and growing silicon wafers). Inhaling a small volume of the gas temporarily changes the timbre and quality of the human voice. The behavior of liquid helium-4's two fluid phases, helium&_160;I and helium&_160;II, is important to researchers studying quantum mechanics (in particular the phenomenon of superfluidity) and to those looking at the effects that temperatures near absolute zero have on matter (such as superconductivity). Helium is the second lightest element and is the second most abundant in the observable Universe. Most helium was formed during the Big Bang, but new helium is being created as a result of the nuclear fusion of hydrogen in stars. On Earth, helium is relatively rare and is created by the natural radioactive decay of some elements, as alpha particles that are emitted consist of helium nuclei. This radiogenic helium is trapped with natural gas in concentrations up to seven percent by volume, from which it is extracted commercially by a low-temperature separation process called fractional distillation. The first evidence of helium was observed on August 18, 1868 as a bright yellow line with a wavelength of 587.49&_160;nanometers in the spectrum of the chromosphere of the Sun. The line was detected by French astronomer Pierre Janssen during a total solar eclipse in Guntur, India.[1][2] This line was initially assumed to be sodium. On October 20 of the same year, English astronomer Norman Lockyer observed a yellow line in the solar spectrum, which he named the D3 Fraunhofer line because it was near the known D1 and D2 lines of sodium.[3] He concluded that it was caused by an element in the Sun unknown on Earth. Lockyer and English chemist Edward Frankland named the element with the Greek word for the Sun, ????? (helios).[4][5]

4. Where does gasoline come from?
July 15, 2008
Gasoline is made from crude oil. The crude oil pumped out of the ground is a black liquid called petroleum. This liquid contains hydrocarbons, and the carbon atoms in crude oil link together in chains of different lengths. It turns out that hydrocarbon molecules of different lengths have different properties and behaviors. For example, a chain with just one carbon atom in it (CH4) is the lightest chain, known as methane. Methane is a gas so light that it floats like helium. As the chains get longer, they get heavier. The first four chains -- CH4 (methane), C2H6 (ethane), C3H8 (propan... (read more)

But some balloons are used for other purposes such as military, defense, medical treatment, meteorology and transportation. 9. Introduction to Solar Science
November 05, 2007
The sun is said to be the life force of creation. It is because of the sun that life sustains on planet earth. Assuming that for one day the solar deity refuses to rise at dawn life on earth would become chaotic and unruly. Solar rays imbue creatures with zest and zeal and hence the sun is given utmost importance. And despite all this know for sure that the sun is not merely a ball of blazing inferno. It is not as though it is merely emitting flames of gases like hydrogen/helium which in turn manifest immense energy. This in fact is the material or gross description of the sun. In its subtle a... 12. The Life of a Star
August 28, 2007
Stars are familiar objects. We see them every day and every night. A single star, our Sun, makes it possible for life on earth to thrive. Stars live so long that they seem eternal to us. But they all had a beginning, and they’ll all have an end, too.
Stars begin their lives in immense clouds of gas and dust called nebulae. Nebulae contain mostly hydrogen gas, with a little helium. In most places, a nebula is often so gossamer-thin that if you walked through one, you’d never notice. However, there are some areas in a nebula where gravity causes the gas and dust to coalesce, gettin... (read more)

13. Use Your Older Articles to Generate Extra Cash
August 20, 2007
In my discussions with other writers, most of them will write an article and then forget about it. They move on to the next one. By managing your article business in this way, you are leaving a lot of money on the table. You should take a lesson from the larger successful sites. Many large and small submission sites make money by placing ads on our articles. Xomba and Helium do it quite successfully. They are making money with articles that authors have written long ago. Unless you are a billionaire and write just for fun, why not copy successful article income techniques from the big boys? ... (read more)

May 12, 2007
Considering the danger represented by the climate changes and the global warming phenomena scientists and businessmen worldwide started to look for alternative energy sources. Besides the wind power or the nuclear energy is has been recently taken into consideration a new power generating substance: helium 3.What exactly is helium 3? Helium 3, an isotope of helium, a gas used to inflate balloons, has a nucleus with two protons and one neutron. 19. earth
March 13, 2007
Earth formed as part of the birth of the solar system: what eventually became the solar system initially existed as a large, rotating cloud of dust, rocks, and gas. It was composed of hydrogen and helium produced in the Big Bang, as well as heavier elements ejected by supernova explosions. Then, about 4.6 billion years ago, it's assumed a nearby star became a supernova. The explosion sent a shock wave through the solar nebula, causing it to implode. As the cloud continued to rotate, gravity and inertia flattened it into a protoplanetary disk oriented perpendicularly to its axis of rotation. Mo... (read more)

20. LNG maps - aiding the energy distribution sector.
January 05, 2007
Liquefied natural gas or LNG is natural gas that has been processed to remove either valuable components (helium) or certain impurities (water, heavy hydrocarbons) and then condensed into a liquid at almost atmospheric pressure by cooling it to approximately –163 degrees Celsius.
LNG is transported by specially designed cryogenic sea vessels and road tankers. It offers an energy density comparable to petrol and diesel fuels and produces less pollution. The most important thing needed for its production and transportation is an LNG plant consisting of one or more trains. Other facilities ... (read more)

21. Advertising Blimp Balloon - Conquer The World With Your Ad
November 11, 2006
The famous Goodyear Company inaugurated the blimp tradition with its first helium filled airship 'The Pilgrim' in 1925. For years, this rubber and tire magnet has embellished the sky with their advertising blimp balloons. Today these gorgeous blimps travel more than 100,000 miles per year across US as Aerial Ambassadors of the company.
Non- rigid airships are informally called 'blimps'. These are different from the rigid zeppelins, which has a definite structure. Blimps depend on the pressure of the gas, usually helium, to keep the airbag in shape. The advertising blimp balloons are colos... (read more)

However the advertising balloon remains one of the most cost-effective and eye-catchy means of hurtling your product into the limelight.

25. Matheson Tri-Gas is Instrumental in Products Consumers Use Everyday
October 22, 2006
Though we are subjected to the green, yellow, and red of traffic lights everyday, we never give a thought to the components of the signals that help keep us safe on the roads. It may come as a surprise, then, that gases are an integral part of traffic lights. "Increasingly, traffic signals are comprised of LEDs [light-emitting diodes], basic semiconductors that use gases to make green, yellow, and red lights," says Bill Kroll, Chairman and CEO of Matheson Tri-Gas, Inc. (www.mathesontrigas.com), a single source provider of industrial and specialty gases. "Most consumers don't realize that gases... (read more)
