How To Catch, Clean, Filet, and Cook Trout

Hobbies,Recreation & Leisure
Although trout fishing in Colorado is often a catch-and-release sport, there are certainly times when you’ll want to partake of the spoils of your Breckenridge fly fishing adventure. The next cutthroat or brown trout you catch while fishing in Colorado can look just as beautiful on your plate as at the end of your fishing line.

Breckenridge fly fishing for trout can be challenging. Wear polarized sunglasses and dark clothing to increase the chances of you seeing the trout and decrease the chances of them seeing you. Approach the water quietly, trying not to cast a shadow. Toss a little tree bark upstream and watch where it goes; that’s where you want to cast. When fishing in Colorado, take note of the bugs in the water, but remember from your fly fishing lessons that 90% of the trout’s food is below the surface so try fishing in Colorado for trout with nymphs. Use the lightest line you have.

Once you’ve caught your Breckenridge fly fishing limit that’s standard for fishing in Colorado, or enough for your dinner, whichever comes first, it’s time to clean your catch. Place your thumb and index finger in the gills and cut a small opening under the fish’s jaw. Insert the knife in the trout’s anus and slice forward to just short of the cut under the jaw. Holding the fish by the jaw, drag your index finger down the length of the cut to clean the trout. A true Breckenridge fly fishing enthusiast won’t be squeamish about this.

Preparing your catch for cooking is one of the satisfying parts of Breckenridge fly fishing. Holding the fish with one hand with the slit facing you, bend the head back with the other hand and peel the skin down the length of the trout. Lay the trout out on a cloth, slice the meat away from the rib the length of the fish, turn it over and repeat. You now have two clean trout filets – spoils of your afternoon of fishing in Colorado.

After a relaxing afternoon of fishing in Colorado, you’ve prepared your catch for cooking. Cooking your Breckenridge fly fishing catch over a hot cook stove is almost as fun as the actual fishing in Colorado. (Not really) Place your trout in a large ziploc bag and pour enough beer into the bag to cover it. Fire up the stove to start heating the oil in a deep ironstone fry pan while you sit back and finish the leftover beer. This is the part they left out of your fly fishing lessons. When the oil is hot, drain the beer from the Ziploc and add cornmeal to cover your filets. Drop them carefully into the oil and cook to a golden brown. Place the fried fish on a paper towel and sprinkle them with seasoning. Enjoy your Breckenridge fly fishing catch at the end of a beautiful day of fishing in Colorado.
