People in Victorian era had very solid traditions in celebrating Christmas and New Year. Nowadays, English people strongly relate to them when it comes to various customs of Christmas. It happened when the public deliveries began to take place, due to the fact that public transport and different form of communications had improved. At the beginnings, the Christmas cards were made using religious themes that evolved until today when they have various themes and images, including humour, snowy landscapes, Santa Claus and other winter characters. The day of Christmas, celebrated on the 25th of December, was the day of the Jesus Christ birth, being the main reference of Christian religion. It is largely accepted that the actual date of Jesus birth is 25th of December but it may have been chosen for different other reasons. First of all, it is right nine months from the conception moment, and it’s also the day of Winter Solstice on the ancient Roman calendar. The day may included many ancient festivals of winter – that were taking place in the season when people didn’t have field work and they were in expectation for the warm days of the year. A symbol of this celebration, Father Christmas was often referred to as a man in a red suit, being an iconic character in many countries and also called Santa Claus or St Nicholas. But the history of Christmas has much more details than we can find on commercial celebrations that are widely recognised today. The Christmas is widely celebrated by Christians and non-religious people, in their own styles. The gift offering is the main attraction of this holiday and the commercial activities explode at the beginning of December. Nowadays, the Christmas holiday is very popular in England, like in any other country and celebrated quite the same. Annual events take place at Christmas and they have steady traditions of bringing joy and festive cheer. Many markets come over to the United Kingdom from Belgium, France or Germany, setting up stands in the big English cities, around December. There were many markets in Britain during the Victorian era which would sell Christmas products and foods but they were not known as Christmas markets. Today, we can find Christmas markets in England in different locations, from town squares to big, rich homes. They could happen from a couple of hours to a couple of days.
