Can you win if you can’t lose? I’m sure that your first response is yes. But then consider the question even deeper and I’m sure you will realize that there isn't any winning unless there’s a chance of losing. At the moment I am working with Queen of the South football team in Dumfries. They had been on a losing streak and came to me wanting to be trained to think like winners. After one team talk from me, the lads took on board the tools that I had supplied and their losing streak came to an end. These techniques can be applied very effectively in the workplace. How many employers or managers are reading this article now and know they have employees who are capable of rising through the ranks and doing so much more? Those employees are in a similar mindset as those footballers were. They are capable, and no-one would ever question their capability, but they don’t believe they are capable. The belief and values programme that our unconscious mind runs has a higher authority than capability. To explain; you and David Beckham each have ten penalty shots at an open goal. Who will win? You’ll now notice that you have just said ‘David Beckham’ inside your head. What if you knew that I had worked with David Beckham and had him genuinely believe that you were a better footballer than him? Who will win? Now you know you will win because your beliefs have changed - yet your capability was never in question. It is this shift in thinking that I am applying with the footballers / with my corporate clients / employees / personal development clients / children … and you. I am sure you have heard about the current controversy over dyslexia (how come it’s so difficult to spell?). By the time you read this, I will have appeared on BBC1 with year eight schoolchildren from County Durham who had no spelling strategies before I was brought in to help by their head teacher. I use similar techniques with children as those explained above. Your brain is far more superior than anything Bill Gates will ever think of. For example, two plus two. I didn't ask you to add them up but you have just said ‘four’ inside your head. Now tell me you can’t do maths. People do spelling and maths unconsciously and easily. When it becomes a problem, you usually have emotional anchors which get in the way of you accessing the information you require. Then you are given an identity of a bad speller, or whatever, and the identity programme has higher authority than your beliefs and values. Hence, your unconscious mind will adjust all of your thinking to fit your new identity. So I’m sure that you have all watched and seen the results. So can you win if you can’t lose? The answer is, of course, no.
