Ibsen’s works may have been scandalous for his era but the fact remains that they are timeless, and as relevant today as they were back then… Henrik Ibsen was a renowned poet, theater director, playwright and the ‘father of realism’. This Norwegian playwright is credited with being one of the founders of modernism in theatre. His works, originally written in Danish, were not only inspirational for stalwarts like George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde, but they also inspired the burgeoning feminist movement in the US. The Delhi Ibsen Festival 2012 will be a joint effort between the Royal Norwegian Embassy and DADA (Dramatic Arts & Design Academy). It will be an attempt at paying a tribute to Ibsen’s gigantic contribution to theater, an effort at introducing younger generations to the finesse of his writing and pay homage to one of the greatest European playwrights ever. This seven day theater festival will be dedicated to some of Ibsen’s chicest works including Ghosts, The Master Builder, Dolls House (adapted in Hindi/Urdu as Gudiya ka Ghar), When We Dead Awaken, Lady From the Sea, An Enemy of the People and Jai Jawaan Party. The festival will feature young directors and exhibit innovative adaptations and experimental theatre. While Ghosts challenged and questioned Victorian morality and aroused a public outcry, Ibsen wrote An Enemy of People as a rejoinder to this very public outcry. The Master Builder (1892) is one of Ibsen’s most revealing and significant works, with underlying autobiographical streaks, while Dolls House cast a critical and incisive eye on 19th century marriage norms. An Enemy of the People addresses the irrational tendencies of the masses, the hypocritical and corrupt nature of the political system that they support. The play’s heated discussion of ‘Just’, who should control the levers of power in a society, whether the intellectually superior, forward-thinking individual or the mindless majority should dictate public policy, makes for savoury meat to chew on. It is the story of one brave man, whose voice loud and clear as cicada, struggle to do the right thing and speak the truth in the face of extreme social intolerance. Ibsen’s works, his indomitable spirit and unflinching dynamism come together in the seven-day long Delhi Ibsen Festival. Theater enthusiasts are urged not to miss this once-in-a-life opportunity!
