Illinois (pronounced /??l?'n??/&_160;( listen) IL-i-NOY), the 21st state admitted to the United States of America, is the most populous and demographically diverse Midwestern state and the fifth most populous state in the nation. [6] With Chicago in the northeast, small industrial cities and great agricultural productivity in central and western Illinois, and natural resources like coal, timber, and petroleum in the south, Illinois has a broad economic base. Illinois is an important transportation hub; the Port of Chicago connects the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River via the Illinois River. Illinois is often viewed as a microcosm of the United States; an Associated Press analysis of 21 demographic factors found Illinois the "most average state", while Peoria has long been a proverbial social and cultural bellwether. [6]With a population near 40,000 between 1300 and 1400 AD, the Mississippian city of Cahokia, in what is now southern Illinois, was the largest city within the future United States, until it was surpassed by New York City between 1790 and 1800. About 2,000 Native American hunters and a small number of French villagers inhabited the Illinois area at the time of the American Revolution.[7] American settlers began arriving from Kentucky in the 1810s; they achieved statehood in 1818. The future metropolis of Chicago was founded in the 1830s on the banks of the Chicago River, one of the few natural harbors on southern Lake Michigan.[8] Railroads and John Deere's invention of the self-scouring steel plow made central Illinois' rich prairie into some of the world's most productive and valuable farmlands, attracting immigrant farmers from Germany and Sweden. By 1900, the growth of industry in the northern cities and coal mining in the central and southern areas attracted immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe, and made the state a major arsenal in both World wars. African Americans migrating to Chicago from the rural South formed a large and important community, which created the city's famous jazz and blues cultures. Approximately 66% of the population of Illinois resides in the northeastern corner of the state, primarily within the city of Chicago and the surrounding area. Three U.S. Presidents have been elected while they were living in Illinois&_160;— Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and Barack Obama. Ronald Reagan was born in Tampico and grew up within Illinois. Lincoln is interred at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield. "Illinois" is the modern spelling for the early French missionary/explorers' name for the Illinois people, a name that was spelled endless ways in the early records, such as "Ilinioues," "Iliniouetz," "Irini," or "Irinions." "Illiniwek" is the modern version of the endless spellings those early explorers used for Illinois people's name for themselves, such as "Liniouek," "Aliniouek," "Alimiwec," and "irini8ak." An 1864 history states that "Erinouai," "Erinouek," "Alimouek," "Ilinimouek," "Liniouek," and "Illinoets" are all synonyms of "Illinois," all mean the men.[9]

Governor Pat Quinn recently appointed Cortney Anderson Wascher, President of Anderson Lock, to the Illinois Private Detective, Private Alarm, Private Security, Fingerpoint Vendor and Locksmith Board of the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

10. Sangamon Co. gets 5,000 more doses of H1N1 vaccine

Five thousand more doses of H1N1 flu vaccine have arrived at the Sangamon County Department of Public Health, allowing the department to schedule appointments for shots beyond Thursday.
The health department also announced Tuesday that it has received 6,000 more doses of vaccine for the seasonal flu. As a result, the department has resumed walk-in clinics for seasonal vaccine.
Unlike the system for distributing H1N1 vaccine, anyone regardless of age or risk factors can walk in to the department?s two Springfield facilities and be vaccinated for seasonal flu.

For the second time this year, UnitedHealthcare of Iowa and Central Illinois is expanding its Quad-City work force with the addition of more than 30 new jobs at its Moline operation.
UnitedHealthcare plans to fill 30-35 positions, including case managers, clinical administrators and information technology professionals. In May, the company said it was hiring 40 employees to fill new openings for claim processors and client service managers.
