Characteristics of Different Style Designs

Interior Design
If you are planning a remodel, buying a new home, or simply trying to find a new or unified look for your living space, you want to know what the most common design styles are and what their defining characteristics are. You need to find a style that fits right with your personality and taste. It is nice to have an idea of what constitutes different design styles so that you don't end up with a mishmash of furniture and decor that don't unify your space. While blending some styles can come off well, it should be done with intent and not because you don't know what style or feel you are going for. Some styles will lend themselves better to mixing and matching. While modern furniture in Seattle, WA, would easily go in a minimalist style design, it might not fit as well with a Georgian or Victorian interior design.

Minimalist Design

Minimalism in interior design is classified by its focus on the bare essentials of design. Large spaces with minimal furniture and decor are common. The clean lines of the architecture and necessary elements of a room are highlighted. Colors tend to be cool with white or blue lighting. Furniture has little or no ornamentation and usually displays clean, straight lines. In order to a minimalist design to work, you will probably need some well designed storage to keep clutter out of view.

Classic Design

Classic design takes elements from the Greek ideals of form and symmetry. In each room there is usually a strong focal point which everything else is designed around. Symmetry is an important part of classic design. In a living room, for example, each side of the room will mirror the other. Matching armchairs set on each side of a fireplace, or matching sofas facing one another across a coffee table would be two examples of classic design in practice. The color palette is generally more neutral and inspired by natures colors. Grays, browns, off-whites, and light blues and pinks often show up in classic designs. Urban Design

Urban design utilizes materials that are not traditionally thought of as home-decor materials. Urban design also blends natural woods with with more industrial metal elements. Unfinished surfaces are often left exposed as interesting visual features. This might include exposed metal or wood beams, brick walls, and other features. One goal of urban design is to make great use of space. Small apartments in the city need to use space well, and urban design takes that into account. Country and Cottage Design

Country style and cottage style are very similar in design. These styles are characterized by bulky furniture, comfy and cozy spaces where openness is not a priority. These styles may sometimes seem cluttered. Comfort seems to be the biggest consideration. Colorful patterns in florals, stripes, and plaids are common. Country design may different depending on the country of origin. English country will be slightly different than the French country style. Rustic is often a word that is used when describing a country or cottage style. Modern Design

Modern design actually started near the beginning of the twentieth century. The philosophy of those who started the modern design movement was that function should be the primary part of any design. Form and function should always combine. Clean straight lines are common in modern design, with clever storage solutions and minimal decor. Modern design and minimalist design are very closely related, though with modern design the focus is function, while in minimalist design the focus is to have minimal furniture and decor. Modern design is still quite popular and there are many options for modern furniture in Seattle, WA.
