The Internet Protocol ( IP) is a protocol used for communicating data across a packet-switched internetwork using the Internet Protocol Suite, also referred to as TCP/IP. IP is the primary protocol in the Internet Layer of the Internet Protocol Suite and has the task of delivering distinguished protocol datagrams (packets) from the source host to the destination host solely based on their addresses. For this purpose the Internet Protocol defines addressing methods and structures for datagram encapsulation. The first major version of addressing structure, now referred to as Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) is still the dominant protocol of the Internet, although the successor, Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) is being deployed actively worldwide. Data from an upper layer protocol is encapsulated as packets/datagrams (the terms are basically synonymous in IP). Circuit setup is not needed before a host may send packets to another host that it has previously not communicated with (a characteristic of packet-switched networks), thus IP is a connectionless protocol. This is in contrast to public switched telephone networks that require the setup of a circuit for each phone call (connection-oriented protocol). Because of the abstraction provided by encapsulation, IP can be used over a heterogeneous network, i.e., a network connecting computers may consist of a combination of Ethernet, ATM, FDDI, Wi-Fi, token ring, or others. Each link layer implementation may have its own method of addressing (or possibly the complete lack of it), with a corresponding need to resolve IP addresses to data link addresses. This address resolution is handled by the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) for IPv4 and Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP) for IPv6.

November 02, 2009
Codec is an algorithm, usually installed as a program on a server or placed w/in a hardware piece, that is utilized to change voice (in the case of Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP) signals to digital data to be broadcasted through the Internet or other network throughout a VoIP call. The term codec comes from composed words compressor-decompressor or coder-decoder. Codec normally get the following 3 tasks: • Decoding - Encoding • Decompression - Compression • Decryption - Encryption Decoding - Encoding When you call through normal PSTN phone, your tone is transmitted over the t... 6. How Does VoIP Work?
November 02, 2009
VoIP is also called as “Voice over Internet Protocol”. By making use of a VoIP technology and VoIP phone you could effectively utilize the net to make outgoing phone calls. VoIP do this by putting the voice calls on the network that encrypts your voice in data packets and encrypts it in outgoing voice calls. In Voice over Internet Protocol, decryption and encryption is from an analog signal into data packets or digital signal and again to the analog signal. You could make Voice over Internet Protocol calls by a phone with VOIP adapter or from your PC making use of a microphone. Applications o... (read more)

8. Learning More about Internet History
November 01, 2009
The internet is a huge network of networks. Several computer networks across the world connect seamlessly with each other using a protocol known as the "IP Protocol". The connection is made possible through various telecommunication mechanisms such as telephone wires, cable lines or satellite signals. Sitting before your computer, any information that you want which is located in some remote computer on the far corner of the earth - is pipelined from server computer to server computer, until it lands on your screen, in a lightning fast speed. Chris Freville is an expert in this particular fiel... (read more)
