Indonesia comprises of 17,508 islands [1] according to estimates made by the Government of Indonesia, with about 6,000 of those inhabited. The country extends from adjacent the Malay Peninsula in its west and into Melanesia in its east. According to a 2002 survey by National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN), Indonesia has 18,306 islands. Counting tidal islands (periodically submerged) doubles the island figure, and many islands with no name or the same names, making it very confusing even to the government of Indonesia. Management of the islands sometimes includes a Regency (Indonesia) covers a small island chain. The Island of Lombok, Indonesia is one of the Lesser Sundas Islands separated from Bali by the Lombok Strait and from Sumbawa by the Alas Strait. It is 70 mi (115 km) long and 50 mi (80 km) wide and occupies an area of 2,098 sq mi (5,435 sq km).It was ruled by the sultan of Makasar in 1640. 8. Indonesian Surf Travel - Mentawai Islands Boat Trip

In April of 2006 I set off on a 16 day trip with a couple of friends to the Mentawai Islands off the west coast of Sumatra. Leading up to the trip I did alot of research on how to prepare for the unknown. The trip was virtually charter boat based with only a couple days on land at the beginning and end of the trip. Granted, on-board accomodations were plush by local standards. Still, I wanted to be prepared.
