Jane Austen (16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817) was an English novelist, whose realism, biting social commentary and masterly use of free indirect speech, burlesque, and irony have earned her a place as one of the most widely read and most beloved writers in English literature.[1]

Austen lived her entire life as part of a small and close-knit family located on the lower fringes of English gentry.[2] She was educated primarily by her father and older brothers as well as through her own reading. The steadfast support of her family was critical to Austen's development as a professional writer.[3] Austen's artistic apprenticeship lasted from her teenage years until she was about thirty-five years old. During this period, she experimented with various literary forms, including the epistolary novel which she tried and then abandoned, and wrote and extensively revised three major novels and began a fourth.[B]

From 1811 until 1816, with the release of Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1816), she achieved success as a published writer. She wrote two additional novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published posthumously in 1818, and began a third, which was eventually titled Sanditon, but died before completing it.

Austen's works critique the novels of sensibility of the second half of the eighteenth century and are part of the transition to nineteenth-century realism.[4][C] Austen's plots, though fundamentally comic,[5] highlight the dependence of women on marriage to secure social standing and economic security.[6] Like those of Samuel Johnson, one of the strongest influences on her writing, her works are concerned with moral issues.[7]

1. Jane Austen's Tortured Love Classic
October 26, 2009

Sense and Sensibility is one of Jane Austen's best novels, the 1995 film version truly does her work honor. The director Ang Lee use's a deft touch and brings out the best of the novel. Emma Thompson's screenplay brings Jane Austen's novel to life, with finesse and capturing the best dialogue adding life to some memorable scenes. We also get the treat of seeing her in one of the leading roles. As a newer admired of Jane Austen's novels, I think this is the best remake of the classics. This is not the usual dry , stuffy fare usually offered up by the Brits. The plot revolves around... (read more)

2. Best Jane Austen Movie
October 09, 2009

Jane Austen's novels have suffered some tepid and subdued movie productions. Yes, I must say the earlier versions made by the BBC were made with the usual British reserve and well, boring. Jane Austen wrote six of the most read novels of all time. This is impressive owing to the fact that women of the time were thought somewhat scandalous if they pursued a writing career. Jane was a prolific writer of the times . To produce six classic novels by the age of 42 would be a feat for any author. Unfortunately, her passing at that early age deprived us of more of her insightful novels. All... (read more)

3. Jane Austen's Pride And Prejudice - Marriage Proposals Or Insults?
September 24, 2009

How Mr. Collins proposed to Elizabeth Bennet: Not long ago, Mary Patricia and I saw a movie based on the Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice. The scenes in which Mr. Collins and Mr. Darcy proposed to Elizabeth Bennet made us cringe with disgust. This is what Mr. Collins says in a boorish preamble: "Almost as soon as I entered the house I singled you out as the companion of my future life. But before I am run away with by my feelings on this subject, perhaps it will advisable for me to state my reasons for marrying-and moreover for coming into Hertfordshire with the design of se... 4. Jane Austen's Pride And Prejudice - Jane Austen Writing
August 18, 2009

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." With that incredible sentence Jane Austen draws the reader into her story. Is she serious we ask? 'A truth universally acknowledged' is the language of mathematics, of science, of logic; it is like saying: "we are dealing with self-evident truths--axioms." How does this statement apply to society? to families? to manners? From the beginning Jane tells us that a little teasing doesn't hurt anyone --lighten up, dear readers-- don't tighten your seat belts; we're in for ... (read more)

5. Popular Fixtures Used For Clawfoot Bathtubs
July 09, 2009

Ordinarily when we think of clawfoot tubs we are carried to the time of Jane Austen. When ladies wore elegant dresses each day of the week and didn't do anything but recite poetry, play music, and sew and men spent all their time hunting and talking about politics. The years when there was no electrical energy and plumbing. I think it is safe to say that we are grateful to be able to have plumbing pipes heat and carry us the water we need - but why not do it in elegance similar to the old days? These bathtubs are much more smooth and classic in appearance then the standard bathing tub tha... (read more)

6. Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
December 12, 2008

For us poor sods stuck in rainy Britain for our holidays this summer, finding a holiday read beyond the usual escapist fantasies (that make us feel all the more miserable by virtue of the fact we’re still stuck here) or the run of the mill crime thrillers that seem to be the only things set in the UK is a nigh on impossible task. There is nothing that appeals, nothing that catches the eye or tickles your fancy. However, I would suggest looking backwards to the classics. As emasculating as this may sound, why not try Jane Austen’s books? The woman was nothing short of a literary genius, an... (read more)

7. Emma - Jane Austen's Finest Novel
July 24, 2008

First published in 1816 and generally considered Jane Austen's finest work, Emma is a comic portrayal of a heroine whose insensible interferences in the life of a young live-in servant in a nearby village often lead to misunderstanding and embarrassment. Emma was written and published in less than two years, while Jane Austen was living at Chawton in Hampshire. Although it lacks the narrative scope of her other novels, many have hailed it as one of her most perfect and accomplished. Emma is Jane Austen's most unusual heroine being arrogant, self-willed and egotistical. Her interferi... (read more)

8. Sense & Sensibilty - One Jane Austens's Finest
July 16, 2008

A recent and very successful BBC production of Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" has brought to the fore one of England's most successful authors although, her six novels remain popular throughout the world. The writer, George Eliot, has said that Jane Austen was "The greatest artist that has ever written." Jane Austen was born in 1775, at the Rectory in Steventon, a little village in north-east Hampshire, on 16th December 1775. She was the seventh child and second daughter of the rector, the Revd George Austen, and his wife Cassandra Leigh in an affectionate and high-spirited famil... (read more)

9. A Book Lover's Food and Wine Gift Basket
July 02, 2008

There is nothing more pleasurable and luxurious for a book lover than a summer afternoon at the lake or a winter evening around the fire with a good book and a food and wine gift basket. Begin by choosing an author or authors. It is often easier to match the book rather than wine to the recipient. An English food and wine gift basket is an excellent and eclectic choice for fans of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, Charlotte Bronte and the like. English Wines Fine English wine, is there such a thing? There is indeed. Wine has a deep history in Britain; some scholars belie... (read more)

10. Why did ladies of yore not get fat?
April 09, 2008

In Jane Austen's day young women were not usually overweight even though it was unfashionable to be too thin. Food (for people in society) was plentiful and served in large quantities. (Just think of all those formal meals and banquets). But habits and customs were different. What can we learn from those times which will help us today? 1. Real food All the food available was the real thing. There were no fast foods and fizzy drinks full of hidden fat and chemicals in Elizabeth Bennett's day. The foods eaten were mainly local and seasonal and meat would be organic (from animal... (read more)

11. Jane Austen was right after all
January 21, 2008

Sometimes along the avenue of life a handful of us might realise that love may not be all that one thinks it is. And maybe we once held on to the notion that love does conquer all things, until we found out from a little trial and error that it is not so. Not always anyway. Sometimes there is a monetary value involved. And the more this notion lingers in one's mind, the more evident it is becoming that maybe the late and extraordinarily talented Jane Austen touched on a similar issue in her works. It's the one that states in a thought provoking, subtle sort of way that maybe we are onl... (read more)

12. A review of Becoming Jane
August 11, 2007

This is a film that explores the life of Jane Austen, a very famous novelist who wrote such great works as Pride and Prejudice which also became a major motion picture that was received with critical acclaim. Although this film started out somewhat slow, the overall noir of this film is amazing. It contains a stunning performance by Anne Hathaway as Jane Austin, a performance that is just mesmerizing in its breath and scope. Jane Austin is portrayed as brilliant young but really mature women who are in the throes of key life decisions. Her persona is overlaid with levels of brillia... (read more)
