Neon (Greek for "new one") was discovered in 1898 by the famous Scottish chemist Sir William Ramsay. Neon was discovered when Ramsay chilled a sample of the atmosphere until it became a liquid, then warmed the liquid and captured the gases as they boiled off. The three gases that boiled off were krypton, xenon, and neon.

Hopes have been raised that a recovery in the housing market is under way after figures from the Bank of England revealed the number of mortgages approved for house purchase rose to 37,937 in February, 19% higher than in January. It is the highest figure recorded since May last year and also more than ten thousand higher than the record low of 27,330 seen in November. The Los Angeles Lakers secured their sixth consecutive victory by beating their rival team from Portland, Trail Blazers, 100-86 on Sunday 5th January, 2009. This was the 15th time the Lakers remained unbeaten in their hometown. Star players, Kobe Bryant scored 26 points and Pau Gasol scored another 19 adding massively to the winning total.
Portland's player LaMarcus Aldridge was the lead scorer on the team who secured 22 points with another 11 points from rebounds. The five starters all scored in double figures. However, Trail Blazers succeeded in shooting only 39%.
