Japanese (????, [niho?go]&_160; ( listen)) is a language spoken by over 130&_160;million [2] people in Japan and in Japanese emigrant communities. It is a member of the Japonic (or Japanese-Ryukyuan) language family. There are a number of proposed relationships with other languages, but none have gained unanimous acceptance. [3] Japanese is classified as an Altaic language by many linguists, even more linguists see a connection with Korean. It is an agglutinative language and is distinguished by a complex system of honorifics reflecting the hierarchical &_160; nature of Japanese society, with verb forms and particular vocabulary to indicate the relative status of the speaker, the listener, and persons mentioned in conversation. The language has a relatively small sound inventory, and a lexically significant pitch-accent system. Japanese is a mora-timed language. The Japanese language is written with a combination of three scripts modified Chinese characters called kanji (??), and two syllabic scripts made up of modified Chinese characters, hiragana (???? or ???) and katakana (???? or ???). The Latin alphabet, romaji (????), is also often used in modern Japanese, especially for company names and logos, advertising, and when entering Japanese text into a computer. Arabic numerals are generally used for numbers, but traditional Sino-Japanese numerals are also commonplace (see Japanese numerals). Japanese vocabulary has been heavily influenced by loanwords from other languages. A vast number of words were borrowed from Chinese, or created from Chinese models, over a period of at least 1,500&_160;years. Since the late 19th century, Japanese has borrowed a considerable number of words from Indo-European languages, primarily English. Because of the special trade relationship between Japan and first Portugal in the 16th century, and then mainly the Netherlands in the 17th century, Portuguese and Dutch have also been influential. Although Japanese is spoken almost exclusively in Japan, it has been and sometimes still is spoken elsewhere. When Japan occupied Korea, Taiwan, parts of China, the Philippines, and various Pacific islands before and during World War II,[4] locals in those countries were forced to learn Japanese in empire-building programs. As a result, many elderly people in these countries can speak Japanese in addition to the local language. Japanese emigrant communities (the largest of which are to be found in Brazil[citation needed]) sometimes employ Japanese as their primary language. Approximately 5% of Hawaii residents speak Japanese[citation needed], with Japanese ancestry the largest single ancestry in the state (over 24% of the population). Japanese emigrants can also be found in Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Australia (especially Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Cairns), the United States (notably California, where 1.2% of the population has Japanese ancestry[citation needed], and Hawaii), and the Philippines (particularly in Davao and Laguna). However, their descendants, known as nikkei (??) rarely speak Japanese fluently after the second generation.

October 22, 2009
Japanese can seem bare and minimalist, since the Japanese try to use the fewest words necessary to make the most meaning . This sense of minimalism can also be observed in other aspects of Japanese culture, particularly in famous poetry forms like the haiku. This does make learning Japanese easier.
The great thing about teaching yourself Japanese is that even with a limited vocabulary you will already be capable of constructing grammatically correct sentences. Japanese grammar is pretty easy, and the order of words in a sentence may be re-arranged just so long as articles and prefixes are... (read more)

13. Learning The Japanese Language.
October 19, 2009
If you’re curious about how to learn Japanese (or Nihonggo, as they call it), you can begin by by appreciating just how it sounds. That's right, just start by doing some concentrated listening.Japanese has 5 vowels and 15 consonants. However, for the Japanese, words are not made up of individual letters like in European alphabets, rather they made up of syllables. This helps explain why the Japanese have a particular accent when speaking other languages. This also is the reason why despite having less sounds than most languages, the Japanese scripts Hiragana and Katakana utilize a combin... (read more)

14. Writing Japanese Language: What are Kanji, Hiragana & Katakana
October 12, 2009
The Japanese language is so fascinating. The tonal qualities of the language is quite unique and the inherent politeness of the Japanese people is translated well into its language which is in turns elegant and stylish and drips with respect.
Japanese writing is also a very elegant script and it has evolved from its original Chinese script beginnings to become something that is intrinsically Japanese. 15. Standards for Buying a Language Translation
August 13, 2009
Buying a language translation is not easy. This is because Translation is not a commodity. When you are in need of a translation it is not wise to simply go out and ask several translation service providers how much they charge per word and then choose the lowest figure. There are many more factors which you should consider when choosing a translation service. For example, you’ll obviously need to specify which languages you want your text translated from and into (e.g. French to English or German to Japanese). And just as color and price are not the only factors in buying a car, you’ll... (read more)
