Search Results - JavaScript

Type in a word or phrase to search, you can also type in Article ID's separated by commas:

the JavaScript series.

JavaScript was originally developed by Brendan Eich of Netscape under the name Mocha, which was later renamed to LiveScript, and finally to JavaScript.[5][6] The change of name from LiveScript to JavaScript roughly coincided with Netscape adding support for Java technology in its Netscape Navigator web browser. JavaScript was first introduced and deployed in the Netscape browser version 2.0B3 in December 1995. The naming has caused confusion, giving the impression that the language is a spin-off of Java, and it has been characterized by many as a marketing ploy by Netscape to give JavaScript the cachet of what was then the hot new web-programming language.[7][8]

JavaScript, despite the name, is essentially unrelated to the Java programming language even though the two do have superficial similarities. Both languages use syntaxes influenced by that of C syntax, and JavaScript copies many Java names and naming conventions. The language's name is the result of a co-marketing deal between Netscape and Sun, in exchange for Netscape bundling Sun's Java runtime with their then-dominant browser. The key design principles within JavaScript are inherited from the Self and Scheme programming languages.[9]

"JavaScript" is a trademark of Sun Microsystems. It was used under license for technology invented and implemented by Netscape Communications and current entities such as the Mozilla Foundation.[10]

2. New Malicious iFrame Injection - Mal/Iframe-N
November 11, 2009

The Mal/Iframe-N appears to be the latest malicious iframe injection attack on websites. I had touched on this briefly in other articles combatting malicious iframe injection attacks. Security researchers warn that this new injection attack has infected thousands of websites with malicious IFrames. In order to avoid detection, the malicious IFrames get their src attribute (their URL) through an "onload" JavaScript event. Since releasing detection for Mal/Iframe-N, SophosLabs have seen a rising number of detections. Detections are now into the thousands of websites affected by this t... (read more)

3. More On Hidden Malicious Iframe Injections
November 11, 2009

If you have been reading my articles on combating malicious iframe injections, you will have noticed that these malicious iframes have a basic configuration as shown below: [iframe src='http://url/'width='1'height='1'style='visibility: hidden;'][/iframe] They have this configuration so that hackers can hide these unwanted iframes by making them invisible. The iframe is created with width and height of 1 pixel, visually it’s just a point. They also specify a style that makes it invisible: style='visibility: hidden;' These iframes are invisible to web surfers but they can be dete... (read more)

5. SEO Analytics and Google
October 28, 2009

If you want to utilize SEO to increase your website rankings within the major search engines, I must state that Google Analytics is not something you should consider utilizing for SEO. Google Analytics is flawed even with its ease of usage and tools. Firstly, Google Analytics utilizes “page tagging technology” and this particular program can only record information on browsers which execute JavaScript. These types of browsers will never execute JavaScript in your source code. Google Analytics is wonderful at tracking visitors but Google Analytics is flawed when it comes to reporting sp... 7. CSS and JavaScript in External Files
October 26, 2009

When a business owner decides to bring their business to the web, generally the last thing that they think about is search engine optimization. They assume that whomever they hire to do their web design will put up a site and then submit it to the search engines and the traffic will magically pour in. Unfortunately it takes more than that to drive search engine traffic to your site, and even more unfortunately most developers don't program with SEO in mind, nor do they educate the client about the process involved in gaining traffic from search engines. October 22, 2009

Forms are a very common way of interacting on the Internet and you can see them used everywhere - to collect comments, for registering products, even for navigation. The problem is that sometimes we don't use things in the way they were intended and when we 'stray' from the ideal state, problems crop up. We as webmasters can't always identify accessibility problems when we code, but people who use screen-readers or other assistive technologies can. Here are some guidelines for you to use to code accessible forms. Screen-readers are really buggy in their implementation of javascript so lea... (read more)

12. Internet Marketing ppt - Internet Marketing is Business, not Just Search Engine Algorithms
October 21, 2009

Not two weeks ago I had a chat with someone (an SEO) about some online media buying and although the figures made an infinite amount of sense (6 figure monthly page views – prime location banner purchase for less than £90 per month!), he said, "but there is no SEO value from the banner link" (it was JavaScript)! Astonished, I spent the next hour arguing the case for buying the coverage, but it would seem that the majority of SEOs just don’t see the value of applying traditional marketing techniques to the web – they just don’t "fit" into the SEO mindset. What is really bizarre though is that wh... CGI and Java Scripts are both functional with both Netscape and Internet Explorer browsers. But there is an essential difference between the two. Java functions as a code executed and downloaded in the clients' side while CGI operates with the server. Before probing deeper into the difference of the two, let us first try to understand these two often-used scripts. Java Script requires no special plug-ins, and it works transparently within an HTML page. It animates web page graphics, allows users to change page elements (background color, display preferences), and allows site navigation. ... (read more)
