Leadership has been described as the “process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”.[1] Definitions more inclusive of followers have also emerged. Alan Keith of Genentech states that, "Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happen."[2] According to Ken Ogbonnia [3], "effective leadership is the ability to successfully integrate and maximize available resources within the internal and external environment for the attainment of organizational or societal goals."

Leadership remains one of the most relevant aspects of the organizational context. However, defining leadership has been challengingand and definitions can vary depending on the situation. According to Ann Marie E. McSwain, Assistant Professor at Lincoln University, “leadership is about capacity the capacity of leaders to listen and observe, to use their expertise as a starting point to encourage dialogue between all levels of decision-making, to establish processes and transparency in decision-making, to articulate their own values and visions clearly but not impose them. Leadership is about setting and not just reacting to agendas, identifying problems, and initiating change that makes for substantive improvement rather than managing change.”

The following sections discuss several important aspects of leadership including a description of what leadership is and a description of several popular theories and styles of leadership. This article also discusses topics such as the role of emotions and vision, as well as leadership effectiveness and performance, leadership in different contexts, how it may differ from related concepts (i.e., management), and some critiques of leadership as generally conceived.

Students of leadership have produced theories involving traits [4], situational interaction, function, behavior, power, vision and values [5], charisma, and intelligence among others.

1. How To Project and Build Your Confidence
November 20, 2009

Confidence: that elusive capacity to project strength, wisdom, leadership and competence in the face of extraordinary -- or, even ordinary -- circumstances, even while we feel like collapsing on the inside. What this means, is that in every particular situation we exude the desired characteristics that make associates believe we are calm, collected and have the talent to pull through to the other side. In short, we believe in ourselves and we give folks grounds to believe in us, too. This gift to project confidence will stretch a long way in helping us be triumphant in life. This is especially... 5. Why a Top Sales Manager Must Always Tune Into The Right Frequency
November 20, 2009

It's definitely clichéd, but I think this is one of the most critical elements to successful sales management and that is to make sure you are tuned into the right radio frequency with your salespeople. There's only one radio station that your sales executives like to listen to and that radio station is: WIFM. (You might say WIIFM, but let's not get too technical here...). This is the "What's-In-It-For-Me" radio frequency. This is the only station they pay any attention to and if you're not broadcasting on it all the time, 24-7, then your sales reps are gonna switch you over to some... (read more)

6. Setting the Bar Higher As a Top Sales Manager
November 20, 2009

I just love the "corporate sales buzzwords" don't you? Some of my personal favorites: "We need to start thinking outside the box" "Let's take a deeper dive on that..." "We need to give it 110 percent!" "Let's create a win-win for the customer" "It's all about change management" "Let's take that offline" "At the end of the day..." "Let's produce some strong organic growth" And my personal favorite: "We need to set the bar high" I once heard an expression that stuck with me on the use of profanity in speech. I may not have it exactly right, but it goes like someth... (read more)

7. Why Sales Managers Need to Make Regular Deposits in Trust Account
November 20, 2009

In your bank account, you have an ATM card that only you have the PIN number to access the account funds. Every week, you make regular deposits and withdrawals into your account. Base salary deposits go in regularly through automatic deposit, while bonuses and commission checks go in periodically with expense checks and other deposits. You make cash withdrawals, debit card purchases, write checks, and make other payments. Unless you enjoy bouncing checks and incurring overdraft fees, you're careful to monitor your balances so you don't bounce checks and rack up those nasty overdraft fees... (read more)

November 19, 2009

Always remember this, in attraction marketing; it's about who you are, how you carry yourself, and how others perceive you. 13. Markey right to vote against flawed health-care bill
November 19, 2009

Like all of you, I'm tired of the health-care reform issue, yet here I am writing about it once again. But the issue is very important. Aside from the medical consequences, it has a profound economic impact and will certainly affect your business. Recently, U.S. Rep. Betsy Markey voted against the 1,990-page Affordable Health Care for America Act (HR 3962), and she was right for doing so. Skeptics point out her vote was a simple political calculation, that her party's leadership released her vote because they had enough to pass the bill. Perhaps, but that's speculation. What is kno... 16. Focused and Effective Coaching
November 19, 2009

read a couple of books lately that have really inspired me. One is The Jackrabbit Factor by Leslie Householder. This is a great story about a guy who is depressed about his life as he is dealing with the very common, difficult situations we all experience at some point. He finds himself in a strange sort of dreamland where people are scrambling around in what appears to be the “rat race” of life, trying to collect little brown paper bags filled with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Then the main character observes the people who are “successful” and sees that they are carrying rabbits and ... (read more)

20. Mortgage: Obama's Stimulus
November 18, 2009

What is mortgage ? A mortgage is the transfer of an interest in property (or the equivalent in law - a charge) to a lender as a security for a debt - usually a loan of money. While a mortgage in itself is not a debt, it is the lender's security for a debt. It is a transfer of an interest in land (or the equivalent) from the owner to the mortgage lender, on the condition that this interest will be returned to the owner when the terms of the mortgage have been satisfied or performed. In other words, the mortgage is a security for the loan that the lender makes to the borrower. Obama's ... (read more)

The US government under Obama's leadership have produced a stimulus package for mortgage refinancing programs designed to assist people who are facing foreclosure on their homes. The loan modifications incentive is primarily geared towards people who are struggling with mortgages on their homes and is not really intended to help out people who have houses sitting empty, even so it is estimated that the program could help as many as 9 million homeowners. There are 2 options available, providing the criteria for qualifying for the packages are met. Mortgage Refinancing This is whe... (read more)

November 16, 2009

Business is tough, I see it everywhere in the market place, but the more I meander within the industry the more I return, at great risk of more badgering from my critic, to the fundamentals – strong research and development, leadership in product conceptions, broad distribution including platforms in proximity of markets, a focus to the future notably beyond the next quarter, and concern for shareholders – deep concern – the kind that builds value, real value overtime to the frustration of short term traders. Yet, short term traders have little to complain about. Earlier this year FLKI sh... (read more)
