Length is the long dimension of any object. Not to be confused with Depth which is the property of the object that appears to go away from the observer. The length of a thing is the distance between its ends, its linear extent as measured from end to end. This may be distinguished from height, which is vertical extent, and width or breadth, which are the distance from side to side, measuring across the object at right angles to the length. In the physical sciences and engineering, the word "length" is typically used synonymously with " distance", with symbol l or L or letter-like symbol l. Length is a measure of one dimension, whereas area is a measure of two dimensions (length squared) and volume is a measure of three dimensions (length cubed). In most systems of measurement, the unit of length is a fundamental unit, from which other units are defined. One of the oldest units of length measurement used in the ancient world was the 'cubit' which was the length of the arm from the tip of the finger to the elbow. This could then be subdivided into shorter units like the foot, hand (which at 4&_160;inches is still used today for expressing the height of horses) or finger, or added together to make longer units like the stride. The cubit could vary considerably due to the different sizes of people. As early as the middle of the tenth century it is believed that the Saxon king Edgar kept a "yardstick" at Winchester as the official standard of measurement. A traditional tale tells the story of Henry I (1100-1135) who decreed that the yard should be "the distance from the tip of the King's nose to the end of his outstretched thumb". In the physical sciences and engineering, when one speaks of "units of length", the word "length" is synonymous with "distance". There are several units that are used to measure length. Units of length may be based on lengths of human body parts, the distance travelled in a number of paces, the distance between landmarks or places on the Earth, or arbitrarily on the length of some fixed object.

4. Repairing the Heel on Your Running Shoes
November 06, 2009
As any runner will tell you, most running shoes wear quickly and unevenly. This means that although your high-tech EVA midsole may have plenty of bounce left in it, the traction on the outer sole may have worn away - or vice versa. One of the most common places running shoes wear down is on the inside of the shoe’s heel. The fabric of the shoe wears away so that the plastic heel counter is exposed. (This is the part of the shoe that covers your Achilles tendon).
There are several ways to patch up this problem, each requiring varying levels of expertise and maintenance. Choose a method th... (read more)

5. Resoling Your Old Shoes
November 06, 2009
Some of us cannot bear to part with a favorite pair of shoes. I, for one, stand guilty as charged. I still wear my favorite pair of knee-high brown boots despite the fact that their soles are marred with cracks that let the water in (not to mention all kinds of other street fluid whose origins I’d rather not think about) and make an embarrassing “popping” sound that turns heads every time I walk down the street. My favorite pair of Saltwater Sandals (purchased at age 13 and worn proudly until age 21) went through a whole series of color transformations from blue to green to silver to gold to h... (read more)

November 05, 2009
An electric nebulizing diffuser is a small device that has a motor housing and a glass nebulizer. The motor housing and glass nebulizer piece are often connected by a small length of rubber tubing. One or more essential oils are dispensed into an opening near the base of the glass piece. When the diffuser is turned on, the essential oils are aspirated toward the top of the glass nebulizer, where a small stream of air micronizes the essential oils into extremely fine droplets. This fine mist is expelled out the top of the glass nebulizer into the room.

November 05, 2009
There is nothing worse than finding a pair of stylish boots that fit your feet perfectly but not your calves. As a woman with fairly muscular calves, I know firsthand that boots small enough to suit my feet probably will not zip up below my knee. 24. History and Overview of Nine West Shoes
November 05, 2009
Compared to most major shoe companies, Nine West is the new kid on the block. The company was founded in May 1977 when Jerome Fisher and Vincent Camuto saw an opportunity to capitalize on the women’s shoe market. (Compare this to companies such as Clark Shoes that have been around since 1825 or Saucony that were founded in the late 19th century.) To be fair, Camuto and Fisher had been around before 1977. The two men had important ties with shoe manufacturers in Brazil. These ties blossomed into a full-scale wholesale women’s shoe business that was called the Fisher Camuto Corporation. Design a...
