Los Angeles ( IPA /l?'sænd??l?s/) is the largest city in the state of California and the second largest in the United States. [1] Often abbreviated as L.A. and nicknamed The City of Angels, it is rated an alpha world city, having an estimated population of 3.8&_160;million [2] and spanning over 469.1&_160; square miles (1,215.0&_160; km²) in Southern California. Additionally, the Los Angeles metropolitan area is home to nearly 12.9 million [3] people who hail from all over the globe and speak 224 different languages. Los Angeles is the seat of Los Angeles County, the most populous and one of the most diverse counties [4] in the United States. Its inhabitants are known as "Angelenos" ( IPA /ænd??'lino?z/). Los Angeles was founded in 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula (The Village of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels of Porziuncola). It became a part of Mexico in 1821, following its independence from Spain. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican-American War, Los Angeles and California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thus becoming part of the United States; Mexico retained the territory of Baja California. It was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850 — five months before California achieved statehood. Los Angeles is one of the world's centers of culture, technology, media, business, and international trade. It is home to renowned institutions covering a broad range of professional and cultural fields, and it is one of the most substantial economic engines of the United States. Los Angeles also leads the world in producing popular entertainment — such as motion picture, television, internet content, video games and recorded music — which forms the base of its international fame and global status. Los Angeles coastal area was first settled by the Tongva (or Gabrieleños) and Chumash Native American tribes hundreds of years ago. The first Europeans arrived in 1542 under João Cabrilho, a Portuguese explorer who claimed the area as the City of God for the Spanish Empire; he continued with his voyage and did not establish a settlement.[5] The next contact would not come until 227 years later, when Gaspar de Portola, along with Franciscan missionary Juan Crespí, reached the present site of Los Angeles on August 2, 1769. Crespi noted that the site had the potential to be developed into a large settlement.[6]

1. Happiness by Wish Granting
August 26, 2008
It is located in the second sentence of the U.S. Declaration of Independence: we are given the right to pursue happiness. However, many individuals do not know what to do to accomplish this. Some people think that they are entitled to absolute happiness and it should be given to them. But no one can force you to be happy.
Many people think that getting bigger and better stuff will give them purpose or fill that void in their life, be it a newer car, a bigger house, or hotter fashion brands. However, this isn't the case. Even those who are rich are not always happy. Money doesn't buy happi... (read more)

3. How to anticipate the unexpected
August 20, 2008
by Philip Yaffe
According to the adage, “Travel is broadening”. In other words, when you leave your home and go somewhere else, your mind will expand because of the differences you will see. For me, the most valuable, mind-expanding differences are not the big ones that you might be prepared for by reading and education. They the little things that you would never even consider, so that they take you completely by surprise.
When I was growing up in Los Angeles, I never traveled because my parents were small business owners and had no time to go away for vacation. I was in fact ... (read more)

4. Rising to the linguistic challenge
August 20, 2008
by Philip Yaffe
This is a story about a young man growing up in Los Angeles in the 1950s. He was a bit strange for a Californian of that epoch. He of course loved surfing, but he loved mathematics and physics even more. His dream from a very young age was to go to university and get a science degree. And that's what he did.
In 1960 he enrolled at University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). At that time (I imagine it is still the case), in addition to their choosing a major, university students were required to take so-called "cross curriculum" classes in other disciplines. ... (read more)

Southern California, what a great place to live. Even in January, the average high temperature is 68 degrees. Most of the year the weather is perfect for swimming, and swimming pools are common amenities for many homeowners. Those that own a pool often enjoy hosting friends and family for pool time activities. It is a great way to entertain; just invite folks and declare a potluck. August 05, 2008
Servo motors are usually small in size, because they are used primarily in robotics. The product you purchase will have built-in circuitry, and one of its best assets is the amount of power it can generate. The smaller the engine, the smaller the motor. The amount of the torque supplied by the motor is consistent with its overall size.
An output shaft is one very important component of a servo. Using the shaft, it is possible to send a coded signal to determine the servo's position. Repeating the same signal will keep the servo in place. If you change the signal, the angle of the servo m... (read more)

11. Top 12 Reasons Why TODAY is the Best Time in Years For Investing in Real Estate
July 31, 2008
Once upon a time, in the seemingly unending real estate booms of the 1980s and 1990s, everybody who could scrape together a down payment and keep the payments up for about three months could flip the house for a profit. Homes in the Sunland-Tujunga area of Los Angeles County, the northwest corner where high-priced Southern California price inflation hadn’t gone hog-wild quite as fast, more than tripled in value between 1997 and 2007 (average $165,000 to an average of nearly $500,000).
Those times are gone, probably never to return. Instead of being able to fall over your own feet and make... (read more)

17. Wrongful Termination Issues Confronting Los Angeles Employees
July 11, 2008
California employees who work mostly as “at-will” workers may find themselves at risk of being terminated for any reason, even an unfair one, or for no reason at all. Typically, a worker who has been working for the company for less than five years, and has no written employment contract, is considered an "at will" employee under California law.
To be able to file a claim for wrongful termination, the termination must violate some fundamental public policy. In simple terms, this means that some state or federal statute, regulation, or constitutional provision must be implicated by the te... (read more)
