Search Results - Maize

Type in a word or phrase to search:

Maize (IPA /'me?z/) (Zea mays L. ssp. mays), known as corn in some countries, is a cereal grain domesticated in Mesoamerica and subsequently spread throughout the American continents. After European contact with the Americas in the late 15th and early 16th century, maize spread to the rest of the world.

Maize is the most widely grown crop in the Americas (270 million tonnes annually in the United States alone). Hybrid maize, due to its high grain yield as a result of heterosis ("hybrid vigour"), is preferred by farmers over conventional varieties. While some maize varieties grow up to 7 metres (23 ft) tall in certain locations,[1] most commercially grown maize has been bred for a height of 2.5 metres (8 ft). Sweet corn is usually shorter than field-corn varieties.

The term maize derives from the Spanish form (maíz) of the indigenous Taino term for the plant, and is the form most commonly heard in the United Kingdom.[2] In the United States, Canada and Australia, the usual term is corn, which originally referred to any grain (and still does in Britain), but which now refers exclusively to maize, having been shortened from the form "Indian corn" (which currently, at least in the U.S., is often used to refer specifically to multi-colored "field corn" cultivars).[3]

Maize stems superficially resemble bamboo canes and the internodes can reach 20–30 centimetres (8–12 in). Maize has a very distinct growth form; the lower leaves being like broad flags, 50–100&_160;centimetres long and 5–10&_160;centimetres wide (2–4&_160;ft by 2–4&_160;in); the stems are erect, conventionally 2–3&_160;metres (7–10&_160;ft) in height, with many nodes, casting off flag-leaves at every node. Under these leaves and close to the stem grow the ears. They grow about 3&_160;centimetres a day.

1. Exports of unprocessed cereals impact on animal feed supply
August 21, 2008

Uganda’s continued export of unprocessed cereals is partly to blame for the current shortage of animal feeds in the country. Most cereals, especially maize, are exported as unprocessed consequently there are no residual byproducts that can be used to manufacture animal feeds. Some animal farmers now want a law to be passed to enforce value addition on all cereals so that byproducts can be used to manufacture animal feeds. “After several meetings and consultations the Animal feed bill was drafted and tabled to the 7th Parliament, unfortunately nothing happened. We humbly beg you to ... (read more)

A brewery has been set up at Tallapalem near Narsipatnam to make beer by using maize while several units have come up to produce bio-diesel in the recent past. The increase in fuel cost has made an impact on the industry. The containerization leading to dispatch of maize, the main feed of poultry birds, in small parcels to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries ha... (read more)

Some big carp baits have endured the test of time over many decades. Some have especially proved themselves far more productive long-term for the bigger specimens. Many anglers desire consistent big carp catches and baits that can possibly level out differences between an angler’s abilities, time available and money resources, experience and so on. There is no doubt among those anglers that use ‘high’ or ‘balanced’ nutritional value baits, that they produce long-term big fish results. Providing the essential dietary requirements of fish can very much determine the initial and repeated beh... (read more)

10. Is Biofuel Craze a Mirage?
March 07, 2008

n September 2007, Lewis Smith, Environment Reporter for Times Online, warned us that we may need to jump off the biofuel bandwagon. Calculation showed that rapeseed and maize biodiesels produced up to 50-70 of deforestation in Malaysia between 1985 and 2000 was done to create palm oil plantations, palm oil being a cheap means of producing biofuel. Some 12 million acres are needed to meet the U.S. demand for ethanol. Where will we get enough land to grow all that corn? How much will it take from food crops? U.S. farmers are predicted to plant some 90.5 million acres of corn in 2008, the highest... (read more)

This article will explore the merits and demerits of planting tree crops or annual crops vis a vis its environmental impact. One of the major contributors to environmental damage during the planting of annual crops is the heavy usage of machineries in all aspects of cultivation of the crops. 14. Bio Fuels Take Food off My Plate
December 02, 2007

In the mad rush to save the planet and reduce climate change, farmers across the globe are increasingly ripping up food crops and turning the land over to grow bio fuels. Maize, sugar cane, palm oil and oil seed rape can be turned into ethanol or other biofuels to use in your car instead of petrol. This may help us to fight global warming - but it is driving up food prices throughout the world. The changing of existing crops to bio fuels from existing farmers or the creation of new opportunities for some farmers is leading to jobs and increased prosperity for some, but they are also helpi... 15. MAKING CATFISH AND CARP GROUND BAITS - Fishing Secrets Of Nuts!
October 01, 2007

If you are looking for something different to boost your catches, you can never be stuck for choice and there are some very effective ones too. Nuts are one very special ingredient and bait that has caught fish reliably for ever. There are many reasons why such an often ‘foreign’ food item produces fish. But fish just love them! One important mention is nut preparation. Unless nuts are used as finely crushed or flour form, they need correctly soaking for at least 12 to 24 hours to ensure they have fully absorbed water. Many fish have died as a result of fish eating nuts thrown in as groun... (read more)

16. MAKING THE BEST OF CARP BAITS - Pellets Are Dynamite
June 17, 2007

Pellets are great carp catchers. Period. Most anglers have used the usual trout, salmon halibut, betaine or corn steep liquor pellets in the past, but there’s far more to pellets than meets the eye! The great boilie revolution in carp fishing meant that in Europe, carp became very used to being caught over large beds of boilies as their use became almost universally accepted. However, those who have been individual enough to do their own thing have always had the edge over fishing boilies conventionally. This may be down to a realisation that carp love to feed intensively upon small... (read more)

17. THE CARP FISHING PELLET BAIT REVOLUTION - Get on It
June 17, 2007

Many anglers now use pellets exclusively for their carp fishing. It’s not surprising given their effectiveness. Even the use of pellets as a particle bait while fishing boilies over the top was once a massive edge, fooling the fish into picking up baits that were dissolving and not dissolving at the same time. These days it is common on many waters to know carp are ravenously clearing up your free chum bait pellets while your hook baits get ignored. The use of trout pellets, salmon pellets and now the infamous halibut pellets is just down to angling fashions changing as they always do. Ev... (read more)

18. BIG CARP FISHING BAIT SECRETS - The Drugging Power of Plant Extracts
April 23, 2007

When you think of fishing baits often meats and proteins come to mind. Worms and liver for example have their place, but what can you think of that can actually multiply the performance and catch rates of these baits? Why not turn your bait into a ‘drug!’ Some of the most important health providing and ‘recreational’ drugs originally have plant origins although these days, many are ‘cloned’ or copied using synthetic chemicals. Even the most basic of whole plant product baits like sweetcorn, maize, hempseed and ‘chufas’ or tiger nuts or peanuts have powerful effects on fish, having brough... (read more)

19. TARGET BIGGER CARP WITH BAIT - A Discussion Extract:
April 11, 2007

Here’s a great bait suggestion. Bait is such a wide spectrum of opinions, and most baits success hinge upon the fact that fish have not been hooked on them before, to give them a maximum edge; that of being ‘different.’ See how to here! Even where carp keep eating baits where they get their energy supply from carbohydrate based baits containing semolina, rice flour, maize meal, soya flour and the like, they perhaps are homing in on the fact that so much of it is being used rather than looking specifically for it to supplement their natural diet. So much depends on variables like wat... (read more)

February 03, 2007

* Sometimes your conventional rigs and baits lose their ‘edge,’ and your catches start to slow down. So what can you do instead to keep those big fish getting hooked? Here are a few well proven alternative ideas for you to really benefit from. Firstly, you could combine pepperoni sausage or luncheon meat, with a boilie on one or two ‘hairs’ on your hook. Even making up a simple paste dough, with perhaps blue cheese and yeast extract with semolina and eggs, with amino acids body building supplements added, could well be a winner. Use this bait as a long sausage on a long hair. Add a ... (read more)

25. Genetically Modified Maize Vaccine can aid Farmers in Developing Nations
September 05, 2006

In many developing nations around the world, small-scale farmers often rely upon poultry farming solely for their livelihood. Unfortunately, for many of these farmers, this livelihood has been affected by the Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV), a contagious and fatal viral disease that infects a wide range of both domestic and wild birds, including chickens. NDV also has a devastating effect on commercial poultry production. Since vaccines for poultry are too costly for these farmers who eke out very meager livings, a cost effective solution needed to be developed. Fortunately, researchers in Mexic... (read more)
