A map is a visual representation of an area—a symbolic depiction highlighting relationships between elements of that space such as objects, regions, and themes. Many maps are static two-dimensional, geometrically accurate (or approximately accurate) representations of three-dimensional space, while others are dynamic or interactive, even three-dimensional. Although most commonly used to depict geography, maps may represent any space, real or imagined, without regard to context or scale; e.g. Brain mapping, DNA mapping, and extraterrestrial mapping. Road maps are perhaps the most widely used maps today, and form a subset of navigational maps, which also include aeronautical and nautical charts, railroad network maps, and hiking and bicycling maps. In terms of quantity, the largest number of drawn map sheets is probably made up by local surveys, carried out by municipalities, utilities, tax assessors, emergency services providers, and other local agencies. Many national surveying projects have been carried out by the military, such as the British Ordnance Survey (now a civilian government agency internationally renowned for its comprehensively detailed work). In addition to location information maps may also be used to portray contour lines (isolines) indicating constant values of elevation, topography, temperature, rainfall etc.

1. From the canvas to the cup, new york souvenirs where the art matters
November 05, 2009
As a reporter for the souvenir, gift, and travel industries, I'm always on the lookout for fresh and exciting new product in the marketplace. Usually I find myself pretty unimpressed with the offerings that I see. The formula appears to have stayed the same for decades: tired cartoon graphics, boring text, and bland images of maps abound. When I stumbled upon the company Fifth Avenue Manufacturers, I was pleasantly surprised to find something bold and original. Here I found colorful and bright, eye popping artwork. This is a company built around the paintings, fine art, and designs of art... (read more)

November 01, 2009
An IAM (Index Allocation Map) page in MS SQL Server database is a metadata entry that maps the extents in a 4GB part of database file. This database file is used by three types of allocation units-IN_ROW_DATA, LOB_DATA, and ROW_OVERFLOW_DATA. An IAM page includes a header to indicate the beginning range of Extents mapped by that particular IAM page. Furthermore, every IAM page contains a sequence number, which acts as its exact position within the IAM chain. 8. The several maps Map That Shouldn't Be
October 27, 2009
Those of you who are avid treasure hunters are probably all well familiar with maps which are completely undecipherable. Even older maps, which were intended to be accurate portrayals of topography, can be almost humorously inaccurate. The existence of a map dating from the middle ages, then, that could be used to correct errors in modern maps created as late as the 1950s would be nothing less than astonishing. But it does exist.
The map was drawn by Piri Reis in 1513. It shows detailed and pointedly accurate outlines of Eastern North and South America, and Western Africa, an absolutely ... (read more)

9. Google Earth employs - Zoom in!,
October 27, 2009
Cartography, uptil some time ago, was the only way of mapping or charting the globe. Map-reading and map-making is a science, the subtleties of which might not be available to every lay person. However, commercial-use maps have been available for a long time now. They are especially useful for tourists and for drivers. The major drawback of paper 2-D maps was that they have always been location or area specific. While an atlas, in theory, is a collection of maps of the whole globe, minute details can never be divined from them.

14. Vail and Colorado Golf Courses......
October 22, 2009
Does Colorado have golf courses? It's like asking...are there needles on a pine tree? When you start searching Colorado maps and resources the first thing you notice are the great number of golf courses in the state of Colorado.
In the mountains, the Aspen area is sparse in the number of golf courses compared to the Vail area, This might have something to do with former President Gerald Ford giving attention to Vail over Aspen. As you might remember, former President Ford was a big golf fan and player. Although not a tournament-class player, he had fun playing as long as you weren't in... (read more)
