1. Property Prices Are Rising Fast As The Tech Boom Spreads Across The Country.
August 20, 2008
When Farallon Capital Management, a U.S. hedge fund, and its joint-venture partner, India bulls, snapped up an 11-acre property in central Mumbai in March 2005 for $54.5 million an acre, the purchase was called an act of idiocy by local developers. A few months later, when the same joint venture offered $95.5 million an acre for a nearby property, its was the second-lowest bid.
Property prices in India are rising fast, and not just in the biggest cities. As the tech boom spreads across the country, as more Indians buy homes, and as the economy grows at faster than 8% a year, real estate ... (read more)

3. Twice an orphan - barmy bureaucracy or welfare of the child? You judge.
June 29, 2008
Last weekend here in France an 11-year-old boy, Joris, found himself effectively orphaned for the second time. He was taken into care after his father, 34-year-old Aboubakar Coulibaly, was deported back to his native Côte d'Ivoire.
Coulibaly had been granted sole custody of Joris back in March 2006 after the child's mother committed suicide.
In spite of looking after his son for a year under the supervision of the local authorities in the west-central department of Maine-et-Loire and the agreement of a family judge, Coulibaly only had a temporary residence and work permit.

4. Barrat Hit By Housing Slowdown
June 15, 2008
UK house builder Barrat Developments has reported decline in sales and raising cancellation rates as conditions in the market deteriorate “significantly”.
The company said that in the 19 weeks to 11 May, reservation rates were down by a third, with a big fall since the end of March.
Barratt said the down turn was as a result of an "unprecedented" drop in the availability of mortgages and lower consumer confidence in the market.
The comments come a day after rival house builders Redrow and Galliford Try issued gloomy statements about the strength of the housing market.

6. Almost 7 years after 9/11, WTC rescue workers are sick and not being supported
May 24, 2008
My name is Irv Kaplan and I am from Manhattan. I started this blog after the crane crash in Manhattan on March 15th. If you are unfamiliar with the story, 7 people were injured (6 construction workers and one person visiting here). Seeing all of the rescue workers searching for those presumed dead obviously reminded me of 9/11 and the massive effort undertaken to unearth the rubble after the WTC crash. For over 8 months, rescue workers were at the site and had to deal with bleak and dangerous conditions. After the tragedy of 9/11, America and this city in particular, felt a renewed commitment ...
