Mathematics is the body of knowledge centered on such concepts as quantity, structure, space, and change, and also the academic discipline that studies them. Benjamin Peirce called it "the science that draws necessary conclusions". [2] Other practitioners of mathematics maintain that mathematics is the science of pattern, and that mathematicians seek out patterns whether found in numbers, space, science, computers, imaginary abstractions, or elsewhere. [3][4] Mathematicians explore such concepts, aiming to formulate new conjectures and establish their truth by rigorous deduction from appropriately chosen axioms and definitions. [5]Through the use of abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics evolved from counting, calculation, measurement, and the systematic study of the shapes and motions of physical objects. Knowledge and use of basic mathematics have always been an inherent and integral part of individual and group life. Refinements of the basic ideas are visible in mathematical texts originating in the ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Indian, Chinese, Greek and Islamic worlds. Rigorous arguments first appeared in Greek mathematics, most notably in Euclid's Elements. The development continued in fitful bursts until the Renaissance period of the 16th century, when mathematical innovations interacted with new scientific discoveries, leading to an acceleration in research that continues to the present day.[6] Today, mathematics is used throughout the world in many fields, including natural science, engineering, medicine, and the social sciences such as economics. Applied mathematics, the application of mathematics to such fields, inspires and makes use of new mathematical discoveries and sometimes leads to the development of entirely new disciplines. Mathematicians also engage in pure mathematics, or mathematics for its own sake, without having any application in mind, although applications for what began as pure mathematics are often discovered later.[7] The word "mathematics" (Greek µa??µat??? or mathematiká) comes from the Greek µ???µa (máthema), which means learning, study, science, and additionally came to have the narrower and more technical meaning "mathematical study", even in Classical times. Its adjective is µa??µat???? (mathematikós), related to learning, or studious, which likewise further came to mean mathematical. In particular, µa??µat??? t???? (mathematik? tékhne), in Latin ars mathematica, meant the mathematical art.

1. Elephants Are Good at Mathematics
August 24, 2008
An Asian Elephant named Ashya knows that three plus four is more than one plus five. Naoko Irie, a researcher at the University of Tokyo presented the findings of a recent elephant study at the International Society for Behavioral Ecology's annual meeting in Ithaca, New York.
As reported by NewScientist.com news service, the elephant knew that when four apples were added to a bucket with three apples, it held more fruit than a bucket in which five apples were added to one apple.
It was no coincidence. On average, elephants chose the bucket with the most fruit 74 per cent of the time.... (read more)

2. RETIREMENT SECURED: YOUR SIMPLE PLAN
August 22, 2008
There are several subjects in this world that interest me tremendously, and at the base of them lay logic, science, mathematics, and the ‘not-so-common’ common sense. Perhaps some of these things interest you. Do you like any of the CSI television shows? How about the others of a similar genre like Law & Order? Forensic Files? Or Cops? At the root of all these shows is the collection of clues, evidence, and gut feelings, all of which, when assembled, tell a story and hopefully convict the wrongdoer or exonerate the innocent.
Well, I am going to use all of these ideas and techniques ... (read more)

He or She then goes ahead to prepare for University Entrance Examination and aim for a very high score. It does not end there; as most Universities have now placed an extra hurdle in the form of post University exams. It ... (read more)

5. Rising to the linguistic challenge
August 20, 2008
by Philip Yaffe
This is a story about a young man growing up in Los Angeles in the 1950s. He was a bit strange for a Californian of that epoch. He of course loved surfing, but he loved mathematics and physics even more. His dream from a very young age was to go to university and get a science degree. And that's what he did.
In 1960 he enrolled at University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). At that time (I imagine it is still the case), in addition to their choosing a major, university students were required to take so-called "cross curriculum" classes in other disciplines. ... (read more)

6. The dissertation - a different kind of academic project
August 20, 2008
A dissertation is commonly defined as long pieces of writings on a specific subject. This definition lacks in many ways and just does not attempt to answer the whole lot of struggle that goes into the making of a dissertation. Dissertations are admittedly lengthy (although many of us have heard the stories of doctoral candidates in science and mathematics who present just a single perfect equation and are simply awarded their degree). Presently this trend is more noticeable in shorter. Moreover it’s not common for a dissertation to exceed more than 300 pages. Structure A dissertation ... (read more)

Many coordinate systems are used in mathematics and physics. For instance, the Cartesian coordinate system and the polar coordinate system are used in science. The General Positioning System (GPS) makes use of coordinate systems based on the latitude and longitude tenets. The longitude of an object in the space is its angular distance (east or west) from a reference meridian, the Greenwich one for instance while the latitude is the angul... (read more)

Game theory is a sphere of applied mathematics that is used in the social sciences (most notably economics), biology, supporting science, computer science, and viewpoint. Game theory attempts to mathematically imprison behavior in strategic situations, in which an folk success in making choices depends on the choices of others. While initially developed to evaluate competitions in which one individual does better at another's expenditure (zero sum games), it has been expanded to treat a wide class of connections, which are classified according to several criteria.

17. The Bible On Reincarnation

A belief in reincarnation indicates a belief that people experience a series of rebirths until ultimately attaining oneness with God. The Bible's teachings on science, ancient history, and mathematics have been proven flawless. Also, it's a most unique book in that there's no doctrine, belief, or philosophy that has been, is, or ever will be on which the Bible is "silent". This fact alone attests to the amazing knowledge possessed by its numerous authors who wrote under divine inspiration, thing they should not have known by any natural means.

19. The Golden Ratio-Web Design, Mathematics and Seashells
July 15, 2008
In many ways, the layout of a Web page is the hardest part - mostly because it's the primary part. Deciding what should go where, how wide or narrow, tall or short everything should be can be very difficult. Many designers just throw things down on the page, white board, or graphics program until they have a design that looks "right" to them. I used to do that too. It's a lot more fun to just push images and blocks around on a blank piece of paper, than to try to figure out if there's some scientific way of composing the page. What is the Golden Ratio In a golden rectangle, it can be divided i... (read more)

24. Numerology
June 23, 2008
Numerology is considered one of many traditional systems used to 'divine' or analyze relationships between numbers and physical objects, living things, words and their their 'hidden' meanings.
Numerology is not considered part of mathematics today, but was popular among early mathematicians, such as Pythagoras. Today, numerology is often associated with the occult but back in the day of Pythagoras and his fellow Greek philosophers, they believed that because mathematical concepts were more practical and easier to classify then physical ones, they had then, greater actuality.

The Maya Indian Civilization flourished from 250AD to 900AD; this is known as history's Classic Period; there were as many as one-million Maya Indians in Belize.
Between the Classic Period and Post-Classic Period the Maya Empire split into separate conflicting "City States," just like the Roman Empire, lasting until the Spanish Colonial Period in the early 1600's. Though not known why, there are many different reasons this split could have happened, such as, over population, a revolt, disease or drought. However, there is evidence that there was over population.
