Type in a word or phrase to search:

Mead (IPA /'mi?d/) is a fermented alcoholic beverage made of honey, water, and yeast. Meadhing ('m?.ð??) is the practice of brewing mead.[citation needed] Mead is also colloquially known as "honey wine". A brewery that deals specifically in mead is called either a meadery or a mazery.[citation needed]

A mead that also contains spices (such as cloves, cinnamon or nutmeg), or herbs (such as oregano, hops, or even lavender or chamomile), is called a metheglin (IPA /m?'??gl?n/).[1][2] The English usage is derived from the Old English medu, from Proto-Germanic meduz. Slavic miod / med, which means "honey", and Baltic *midus, which means "mead", derive from the same Proto-Indo-European root (cf. Welsh medd, Old Irish mid, and Sanskrit madhu).[3]

A mead that contains fruit (such as raspberry, blackberry or strawberry) is called a melomel[4], which was also used as a means of food preservation, keeping summer produce for the winter. A mead that is fermented with grape juice is called a pyment.[5]

The first known description of mead is in the hymns of the Rigveda,[6] one of the sacred books of the historical Vedic religion and (later) Hinduism dated around 17001100 BC. During the "Golden Age" of Ancient Greece, mead was said to be the preferred drink.[7] Aristotle (384322 BC) discussed mead in his Meteorologica and elsewhere, while Pliny the Elder (AD 2379) called mead militites in his Naturalis Historia and differentiated wine sweetened with honey or "honey-wine" from mead.[8]

11. Preventing Garden Invasions
February 15, 2008

I never really thought of weeds as being evil, but occasionally a plant finds its way into your garden and refuses to leave. It turns into a stubborn house guest, spreading its roots through every available patch of dirt, and paying no heed to existing plants in their quest for dominance. You'll spend an entire season pulling and possibly even spraying, but eventually you'll see them rearing their ugly heads, almost in defiance. Ridding your garden of these invasive plants is not just a personal peeve; these pests can smother native plants that provide food and habitats for birds and insect... (read more)

13. How past experiences affect your life
January 12, 2008

Sociologist Herbert Mead developed a theory known as social behaviorism, which helped explained why past social experiences help form an individuals’ personality. Mead did not believe that personality was developed by drives or biologically, but more on terms socially. He stated that the self only developed when people interact with one another. Without the interaction of other people an individual can’t develop a personality. An example of this is if a child is left in total isolation for a long period of time then they don’t mature both physically or mentally. Next, social experience ... (read more)

A Sparkling wine is a wonderful variation of your typical wines and, in particular, is a great treat for the holidays. Mead, being a wine, can also be made in the sparkling variety with very little extra effort. Here is a tutorial on how to make sparkling mead the easy way. Sparkling mead is identical to any other type of sparkling wine in that it is a wine that has continued its fermentation process right inside the bottle. 19. What is Mead? Dispelling the Myth about an Ancient Drink
October 25, 2007

When the word Mead is mentioned the first thing that comes to mind is a group of Vikings sitting around a fire quaffing down large mugs of a rough and tough alcoholic beverage. This is the stigma that mead has endured for centuries and it is unwarranted. Mead is an extraordinarily delicate and delicious wine. To dispel the misconceptions about mead we have to first take a look at the misconceptions about wine. Wine is not an alcoholic beverage that is made from grapes. Wine is a fermented beverage made from any number of food or fruit. You can make wine from just about anything that has a ... (read more)

Apparently, I must have made an impression on him, because for my ninth birthday he bought me one share of Mead Paper Company. My first share of stock, he explained to me that this meant that I owned a small piece of the company. That was it, a fire was lit in me that burns to this day. My Uncle passed away in 1988, at th... It all came about due to a cry from English housewives for more artful, cheaper, mass produced kitchen wares to serve their meals on and drink their mead from. That cry and the invention of the "transfer printing process" made inexpensive, artful plates, dishes and cups and saucers available to the public. Used by a handful of artists in 1756, it spread to other manufacturers and evolved into a more state-of-the-art process enabling manufacturers to produce more complex designs. Ultimately it evolved to a point where double- and triple-applications were possible to make multi-colored, layered ... (read more)

White, red, dessert or sparkling wines, port, mead, rosé or champagne…man’s courtship with this intensely sensory yet cerebral indulgence has stood the long test of time.
