A physician — also known as medical practitioner, doctor of medicine, medical doctor, or simply doctor — practices the ancient profession of medicine, which is concerned with maintaining or restoring human health through the study, diagnosis, and treatment of disease or injury. This properly requires both a detailed knowledge of the academic disciplines (such as anatomy and physiology) underlying diseases and their treatment — the science of medicine — and also a decent competence in its applied practice — the art or craft of medicine. Both the role of the physician and the meaning of the word itself vary significantly around the world, but as generally understood, the ethics of medicine require that physicians show consideration, compassion and benevolence for their patients. Life is short, and Art long;
the crisis fleeting; experience perilous, and decision difficult.
The physician must not only be prepared to do what is right himself,
but also to make the patient, the attendants, and externals cooperate.
— First aphorism of Hippocrates, circa 400BCE, from the Hippocratic Corpus online (translated by Francis Adams)
The word physician comes from the Ancient Greek word f?s?? (physis) and its derived adjective physikos, meaning "nature" and "natural". From this, amongst other derivatives came the Vulgar Latin physicus, which meant a medical practitioner. After the Norman Conquest, the word entered Middle English, via Old French fisicien, as early as 1100. Originally, physician meant a practitioner of physic (pronounced with a hard C). This archaic noun had entered Middle English by 1300 (via Old French fisique). Physic meant the art or science of treatment with drugs or medications (as opposed to surgery), and was later used both as a verb and also to describe the medications themselves.[2][3][4]

17. Discover the Benefits Associated with Fish Oils and Depression
October 31, 2009
I was concerned when I heard that many doctors are missing the boat by not advising their patient as to the proven benefits associated with fish oils and depression. It seems as though whenever you visit the doctor for any reason, they are quick to want to prescribe some sort of chemically based drug to you in order to treat the problem. None of the formulas designed to treat ailments such as depression are without their side effects though.
It seems as though no medical professional is willing to even discuss the findings of thousands of clinical studies that point out that a high leve... (read more)

19. Melrose Place and Med Schools: Cost Passed On To Health Insurance
October 28, 2009
While flipping channels, I came across an episode of the new Melrose Place series. Surprisingly, a plot line in the episode made me think about the cost of health care in America. One of the main characters, Lauren Bishop, is a student in medical school. She is dedicated to medicine and excels in her classes, but financial strife jeopardizes her education. This is an all-too-common scenario in real life; crushing student loans and the lack of ability to pay have led to a shortage in primary care physicians. There are fewer family doctors available to offer preventative care; this results in mo... (read more)
