A physician — also known as medical practitioner, doctor of medicine, medical doctor, or simply doctor — practices the ancient profession of medicine, which is concerned with maintaining or restoring human health through the study, diagnosis, and treatment of disease or injury. This properly requires both a detailed knowledge of the academic disciplines (such as anatomy and physiology) underlying diseases and their treatment — the science of medicine — and also a decent competence in its applied practice — the art or craft of medicine. Both the role of the physician and the meaning of the word itself vary significantly around the world, but as generally understood, the ethics of medicine require that physicians show consideration, compassion and benevolence for their patients. Life is short, and Art long;
the crisis fleeting; experience perilous, and decision difficult.
The physician must not only be prepared to do what is right himself,
but also to make the patient, the attendants, and externals cooperate.
— First aphorism of Hippocrates, circa 400BCE, from the Hippocratic Corpus online (translated by Francis Adams)
The word physician comes from the Ancient Greek word f?s?? (physis) and its derived adjective physikos, meaning "nature" and "natural". From this, amongst other derivatives came the Vulgar Latin physicus, which meant a medical practitioner. After the Norman Conquest, the word entered Middle English, via Old French fisicien, as early as 1100. Originally, physician meant a practitioner of physic (pronounced with a hard C). This archaic noun had entered Middle English by 1300 (via Old French fisique). Physic meant the art or science of treatment with drugs or medications (as opposed to surgery), and was later used both as a verb and also to describe the medications themselves.[2][3][4]

Stethoscopes, as any other medical instrument, have undergone a lot of variations and enhancements. These enhancements have mainly been carried out to ensure that doctors and other medical practitioners do not have any trouble whatsoever listening to body sounds while examining a patient. In the past and even today, the most commonly used stethoscopes are the acoustic ones. These stethoscopes transmit sound from the chest piece, via the hollow rubber tubes, to the ears of the listener. 6. Steps For A Victim Of Doctor Malpractice To Adhere To
November 18, 2009
What do you do if they have been the victim of doctor malpractice or perhaps a close friend or family member has been a victim? Numerous people, surprisingly enough, do not do anything. They assume that doctors are human and permitted to make mistakes, or maybe they assume that since they signed that waiver form prior to surgery, they have forfeited their right to any malpractice litigation.
There is nothing that could be further from the truth for either assumption. When you are invited or required to sign that waiver form prior to a surgery, that act does not waive your rights if the... (read more)

When you are making decisions about your health, you have no choice but to do everything in your power to act wisely. The stakes are too high to make cavalier judgments or to operate on gut instinct. You need to be informed and to act wisely. That is true in all areas of well-being, but it is a particular priority when applied to natural therapies.
That is because you are operating without the more tightly woven safety net that exists for mainstream medical therapies. Doctors and “establishment medicine” are subject to a wide variety of regulations. Their practices are governed and... (read more)

23. Eating Salmon And Giving You A Flawless Face
November 13, 2009
For years doctors have been telling us that eating junk food doesn't cause acne, and you probably know at least one person who eats candy and chocolate non-stop and still has lovely skin. But recently the medical establishment has begun to give serious consideration to how what we eat impacts our health, and our appearance.
One of the most prominent spokespeople for this cause is Dr. Nicholas Perricone, whose "Wrinkle Cure" system touts salmon as a skin-saving miracle food. What started as a fringe trend--eating fish to get a smoother face--has now blossomed into a popular diet plan, and... (read more)

When she saw Dr. Jose Coto emerge from the medical tent, she flagged him down to ask,'How many folks will you see today?' Dr. The woman sighed in relief. 25. The Origins of Back Pain
November 12, 2009
When considering back pain we must concern ourselves with its variants. For instance, back pain can start with slip disks, which in medical terms is called "Herniated nucleus pulposa." (HNP) Doctors define slip disks as ruptures of the "intervertebral disk." The intervertebral rests between the vertebrae (Spinal Column) of the backbone.
The interruption has variants, including the "Lumbrosacral," (L4 and L5) as well as cervical C5-7. The cervical is at the neck and belongs to other parts of the back and neck as well. When doctors consider slip disks they often look through etiology, whic... (read more)
