Medical imaging is the technique and process used to create images of the human body (or parts and function thereof) for clinical purposes ( medical procedures seeking to reveal, diagnose or examine disease) or medical science (including the study of normal anatomy and physiology). As a discipline and in its widest sense, it is part of biological imaging and incorporates radiology (in the wider sense), nuclear medicine, investigative radiological sciences, endoscopy, (medical) thermography, medical photography and microscopy (e.g. for human pathological investigations). Measurement and recording techniques which are not primarily designed to produce images, such as electroencephalography (EEG), magnetoencephalography (MEG), Electrocardiography (EKG) and others, but which produce data susceptible to be represented as maps (i.e. containing positional information), can be seen as forms of medical imaging. In the clinical context, medical imaging is generally equated to radiology or "clinical imaging" and the medical practitioner responsible for interpreting (and sometimes acquiring) the images is a radiologist. Diagnostic radiography designates the technical aspects of medical imaging and in particular the acquisition of medical images. The radiographer or radiologic technologist is usually responsible for acquiring medical images of diagnostic quality, although some radiological interventions are performed by radiologists. While radiology is an evaluation of anatomy, nuclear medicine provides functional assessment.

1. Can A DICOM Viewer Change Your Medical Work Life?
November 17, 2009
Medical facilities both large and small began taking advantage of radiological images with film-based systems initially. Eventually, digital imagery became available, and like all new technology, at the start it came at a very high price. This meant that only the largest medical facilities and hospitals could afford to use digital imaging. Now that has all changed. With the tremendous price drops in all types of digital technology, now more than ever small and mid-sized medical facilities can enjoy the benefits that come from digital imaging just as the large facilities have. So in answer... (read more)

2. CR Solutions For Your Small and Mid-Sized Medical Facility
November 16, 2009
In times past, digital medical imaging has only been available to large hospitals and medical facilities due to the high cost of setting these systems up. As time has gone on, however, all sorts of computer technology has fallen dramatically in price, and this is certainly the case with digital medical imaging. If you are looking for a cost-effective way to acquire your digital images suitable for a small or mid-sized medical facility or office, you may want to look into a cr system.
CR system stands for computed radiography system. Instead of using film as would a traditional radiog... (read more)

3. Portable Xray Equipment Brings Flexibility To Your Medical Offerings
November 16, 2009
As a physician, there are many instances when you might not be able to bring your patients into your office for medical digital imaging. Elderly patients, those who are immobile, as well as professional athletes, sailors on ships, physicians working in prisons or military field hospitals, as well as veterinarians find that they have to take their digital images more often than not out in the field. Being able to offer your patients that type of flexibility makes it easier to provide them with the best of care, which is why many medical facilities find that they have a need for portable xray ... 4. Viztek PACS: What Is It And How Can It Help Small And Mid-Sized Medical Facilities
November 16, 2009
Medical facilities of all sizes are moving to digital medical imaging because it is a cost-effective way to handle patient medical images. It also makes it much simpler to comply with HIPPA regulations regarding the storage and archiving of patient medical images. In order to take your medical facility in this direction, you will want to consider adding a PACS, or Picture Archiving and Communication System. There are several good brands of PACS available, including Viztek PACS, agfa pacs and Kodak pacs.
PACS are basically software and servers that are used for archiving, viewing and di... (read more)

5. Terramed Alliance News Treating Breast Cancer With Adapted Space-Industry Technology
November 18, 2009
Terramed Alliance News Researchers at Rush University Medical Center and Argonne National Laboratory are collaborating on a study to determine if an imaging technique used by NASA to inspect the space shuttle can be used to predict tissue damage often experienced by breast cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy. The study is examining the utility of three-dimensional thermal tomography in radiation oncology.
Preliminary results from the study are being displayed during the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Annual Meeting in Chicago, being held from November 1 - 5, 2... (read more)

7. Angiography and its Different Categories
November 13, 2009
Angiographycan be called one of the greatest breakthroughs in medical science. Also known as arteriography, angiography involves an imaging technique. This is actually an xray study of blood vessels and organs of the body. Special interest in this regard is given to the arteries, veins and the heart chambers. Angiography may further be divided into cerebral angiography, coronary angiography, pulmonary angiography, and kidney angiography depending on the area of performance. Well so, how is angiography done? Well in a layman’s language, it involves inserting a long wire called catheter t... (read more)

9. Cognitive Enhancers - New Tools in Addiction Recovery
November 04, 2009
Treat drug addiction with another drug? It may not seem sensible at first, but medical science suggests that cognitive enhancing drugs might be the panacea addicts need to overcome the real and physical obstacles they encounter on the path to recovery.
Addiction and the Brain
According to several brain-imaging studies of those suffering from addiction, addictive substances such as cocaine and heroin essentially hijack the areas of the brain responsible for rewarding, driving, motivating, and learning. Over time, drug abuse produces such extensive changes in the brain that the addict ... (read more)

10. Medical Imaging Markets: Contrast Agents
November 02, 2009
This comprehensive study of the world market for contrast agents builds on the previous modality-focused reports of Kalorama's medical imaging market reports. The application and versatility of medical imaging modalities are continuing to grow in significance as the population ages and healthcare costs rise. Examinations that can facilitate earlier disease diagnosis and the most appropriate treatment are in order. This bodes well for contrast media markets. Since our last round-up of the contrast media market, the economic environment in the world has changed. Although the recession may have... (read more)
