Mississippi ( /ˌmɪsɨˈsɪpi/ (help·info)) is a state located in the Southern United States. Jackson is the state capital and largest city. The state's name comes from the Mississippi River, which flows along its western boundary, and takes its name from the Ojibwe word misi-ziibi ("Great River"). The state is heavily forested outside of the Mississippi Delta area. Its catfish aquaculture farms produce the majority of farm-raised catfish consumed in the United States. [4] The state symbol is the magnolia tree. Mississippi is bordered on the north by Tennessee, on the east by Alabama, on the south by Louisiana and a narrow coast on the Gulf of Mexico and on the west, across the Mississippi River, by Louisiana and Arkansas. Major rivers in Mississippi, apart from its namesake, include the Big Black River, the Pearl River, the Yazoo, the Pascagoula, and the Tombigbee. Major lakes include Ross Barnett Reservoir, Arkabutla Lake, Sardis Lake and Grenada Lake. The state of Mississippi is entirely composed of lowlands, the highest point being Woodall Mountain, in the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains, 806 feet (246&_160;m) above sea level. The lowest point is sea level at the Gulf coast. The mean elevation in the state is 300 feet (91&_160;m) above sea level.

1. The Merchant Marines, And What They Do
November 04, 2009
The Merchant Marines, And What They Do
Who are the merchant marines? First let me start by saying they are not military. The closest they come to military is that all of their credentials are issued by the United States Coast Guard who oversees all aspects of marine safety on the U.S. waterways. The merchant marines are a civilian organization that work as crew members on all U.S. flagged merchant vessels. These vessels can be any of the following; ocean going freighters that travel around the world. Iron ore freighters on the Great Lakes, Casino boats on the Mississippi river. Tug boats ... 4. Coverage controversy red herring
November 01, 2009
For several weeks now a major topic of discussion and opinion pieces have referred to Mississippi and other states ?allowing? insurance companies to deny health insurance coverage to victims of domestic violence.
As Mississippi commissioner of insurance I have the authority in existing statutes that would allow me to investigate and prohibit health insurance companies from using domestic violence as a pre-existing condition to deny health insurance coverage.

October 01, 2009
By Bennie McCann
At 6,643-feet high, Clingmans Dome isn’t just the highest point in the Smoky Mountains…it’s the highest point in the entire state of Tennessee. As a matter of fact, it’s second only to Mount Mitchell in having the highest mountain peak east of the Mississippi. Believe it or not, on a clear day you can stand at the Dome’s observation tower and see over 100 miles and seven states. That’s quite a view. Osceola McCarty had dreams of being a nurse when she was a little girl growing up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Her dreams were laid aside when family needs forced her to leave school at age 13 and join her grandmother, mother and aunt beside the washing pot in the back yard.
That big black kettle, boiling away under the relentless Mississippi sun, pelting rain, or cold winds, became her existence. You could find her from early in the morning until late in the evening, either washing clothes or stooped over a hot iron as she crisped them up. At some point she became content with her life... Many times, in an effort to afford ourselves the maximum protection permitted by contract law, inspectors include everything but the “kitchen sink” in their inspection agreements. 25. Crony Contracts and the Bush Administration
August 31, 2009
Private contracts are handed out by the federal government in droves these days. However, the use of private contractors is an old tool of the government. Private contractors were used during the removal of Native Americans from the southeast. In 1831 thirteen thousand Choctaws made the long, forced trek from their home in Mississippi to the arid prairies of the mid-west. Howard Zinn said, in his book A People’s History of the United States, "The army was supposed to organize their trek, but it turned over its job to private contractors who charged the government as much as possible, gave the ...
