In chemistry, a molecule is defined as a sufficiently stable electrically neutral group of at least two atoms in a definite arrangement held together by very strong chemical bonds. It can also be defined as a unit of two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds. [1][2] Molecules are distinguished from polyatomic ions in this strict sense. In organic chemistry and biochemistry, the term molecule is used less strictly and also is applied to charged organic molecules and biomolecules. This definition has evolved as knowledge of the structure of molecules has increased. Earlier definitions were less precise defining molecules as the smallest particles of pure chemical substances that still retain their composition and chemical properties.[3] This definition often breaks down since many substances in ordinary experience, such as rocks, salts, and metals, are composed of large networks of chemically bonded atoms or ions, but are not made of discrete molecules. In the kinetic theory of gases the term molecule is often used for any gaseous particle regardless of their composition.[4] According to this definition noble gas particles are considered molecules despite the fact that they are composed of a single non-bonded atom. A molecule may consist of atoms of the same chemical element, as with oxygen (O2), or of different elements, as with water (H2O). Atoms and complexes connected by non-covalent bonds such as hydrogen bonds or ionic bonds are generally not considered single molecules.

2. Antibodies for use in Biomedical Research
November 21, 2008
Antibodies are an unmatched tool used in biomedical research since they attach with high similarity and specificity to an array of molecules - the majority notably peptides and proteins. They are used in proceedings where categorization, quantification, localization or confirmation of a protein is essential. For in-vivo therapeutic applications antibodies are used, due to their capability to bind firmly to a desired molecule. IDEC Pharmaceutical's Rituxan® for use against certain B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and Genentech's Herceptin® drug for precise types of breast cancer are few of the su... (read more)

7. Bodybuilders Discovering IGF
November 11, 2008
Bodybuilders Discovering IGF
IGF deals with the process of cell growth and differentiation in a variety of cells. IGF helps to stimulate the Type I IGF receptor causing more activity in intracellular signaling molecules, leading to cell survival through inhibition of apoptosis.
In layman's terms it means the quantity of cells present is increased and they in turn will split and produce new cells, but at the same time it will stop other cells from cell death otherwise known as cell apoptosis.
The increase in the presence of skeletal muscle tissue is also due to the increased sate... (read more)

8. Is a Reverse Osmosis System For Your Home?
November 05, 2008
Companies that sell reverse osmosis systems (RO) make some pretty far out claims. Some say that RO will remove almost 100% of the bad elements (contaminants) from tap water.
The fact of truth is that reverse osmosis can not remove chemicals such as chlorine, drugs and other chemicals from your home water system.
What reverse osmosis systems can do is remove, actually block, particles that are heavier than water. What this means is things that are composed of molecules that are bigger than in water. Sticks, stones, dirt, tree brances, etc.
Blocking large objects or particles... (read more)

9. Do You Know What Skin Rejuvenation Treatment We Recommend?
November 03, 2008
What’s skin rejuvenation treatment all about, anyway? The basis of the approach has to do with the idea that damage to cells can be repaired.
The body naturally rejuvenates itself by replacing damaged cells, tissues and fibers. When we are young, the skin has some of the most active rejuvenation processes, as it produces numerous new cells on a daily basis. In fact, sometimes it produces too many, which plays a role in the skin-condition psoriasis.
As we age, fewer new cells are produced. Those that are produced have larger amounts of free radical molecules and smaller amounts ... (read more)

10. Computer Technology Based On Molecular Biology
October 27, 2008
In about ten years, computer technology as we know it will stop advancing. Computer chips will not be able to get any smaller or any faster. That is when computer technology based on molecules will take over. From what I have seen in the last ten years, computers in 100 years will be whatever our imaginations can come up with. That could be good, but that could also be very bad. Given the capacity of the imagination, I am very concerned about what will happen because of technology.
The egotistic condition of being human is something that needs to be taken into account when debating for ... (read more)

11. Detailed Information on Mitochondrial Disease
October 20, 2008
Mitochondrial myopathies are a group of neuromuscular diseases. Mitochondrial diseases result from failures of the mitochondria, specialized compartments present in every cell of the body except red blood cells. The mitochondria alter the energy of food molecules into the ATP that powers most cell functions. Mitochondrial diseases comprise those disorders that in one way or another affect the function of the mitochondria and/or are due to mitochondrial DNA. Mitochondrial diseases take on unique characteristics both because of the way the diseases are often inherited and because mitochondria ar... (read more)

13. Buckypaper
October 20, 2008
Buckypaper is 10 times lighter but potentially 500 times stronger than steel when sheets of it are stacked and pressed together to form a composite. Unlike conventional composite materials, though, it conducts electricity like copper or silicon and disperses heat like steel or brass.
Buckypaper is made from tube-shaped carbon molecules, 50,000 times thinner than a human hair, that were first developed in the early 1990s. Buckypaper owes its name to Buckminsterfullerene, or Carbon 60 - a type of carbon molecule whose powerful atomic bonds make it twice as hard as a diamond.

15. Antioxidants and Phytonutrients Medicines
October 09, 2008
A number of oxygen-radicals are formed in our body during process of metabolism of nutrients in body cells. These oxygen-radicals (oxidants) are highly reactive (due to free electrons) and can damage DNA molecules, proteins and cholesterol rich LDL molecules. In defence, body produces substances to prevent damage caused by oxidants or free radicals. These endogenous antioxidants may be inadequate when there is excessive formation of oxidants. This results in disease processes. Numerous studies have shown that oxidative stress plays important role in causation of atherosclerosis, Parkinson's di... (read more)

19. Discover Why Pure Water Distillers Aren't the Best Choice
September 30, 2008
For drinking purposes, pure water distillers are not the best choice. Research has shown that people who drink from a pure water distiller on a regular basis have digestive problems and nutritional deficiencies.
You see, pure water distillers strip the mineral content to a point that is unnatural. Nowhere in the world are there naturally occurring de-mineralized waters. Even if you are not a naturalist, you have to see that throughout the history of man, we drank what was available.
It seems that when we drink from a pure water distiller, the water's molecules actually absorb the min... (read more)

20. IMPORTANCE ON HOW TO TREAT ASTHMA AND ALLERGY NATURALLY
September 29, 2008
Asthma is an allergic inflammation of the lungs, which can be triggered by air pollutants, pollens, molds, dust, animal dander, chemicals, foods, exercise, or even temperature changes. These asthma triggers produce allergens, which are then absorbed into the bloodstream causing the B cells or white blood cells to produce billions of molecules of the antibody IgE. These IgE molecules in the bloodstream then combine with the mast cells, which line the blood vessels or basophils, a type of white blood cell. Mast cells and basophils both contain histamine and serotonin, and the antibody IgE cause... (read more)

21. Learn the Ways to Prevent Wrinkles
September 29, 2008
Looking for ways to prevent wrinkles? There are many factors that can encourage the formation of a wrinkle or a fine line. But, at the root of all of these factors is oxidative stress caused by free radical damage.
Free radicals are molecules that serve some valuable functions in the human body, but at a point, they basically need to be "turned off". The counter balance that turns the radicals off is known as an antioxidant.
Antioxidants are vitamins and other nutrients. They come from fruits, vegetables, meats, legumes and oils. In fact, nearly all of the foods we eat have some anti... (read more)

22. Cholesterol: Good or Bad?
September 29, 2008
Let’s get something straight from the on start; cholesterol is an essential compound in humans and for that matter in the entire animal kingdom.
The idea that the cholesterol molecule is ‘bad’ is just plain inaccurate. Animals use cholesterol as their building blocks for cell membranes and other structural components. Cholesterol is the basic structural building block for hormones and other molecules essential to humans.
What is Good and Bad Cholesterol?
In actuality there is only good cholesterol until there is an over accumulation of cholesterol in the artery cells and in th... (read more)
