(0.16% of the world population)The name Mongol (Mongolian Mong?ul; cyrillic script ??????&_160;(help·info) Mongol) specifies one or several ethnic groups, now mainly located in Mongolia, China, and Russia. A narrow definition includes the Mongols proper, which can be roughly divided into eastern and western Mongols. In a wider sense, the Mongol people includes all people who speak a Mongolic language, such as the Kalmyks of eastern Europe. The name "Mongol" appeared first in 8th century records of the Chinese Tang dynasty, but then only resurfaced in the 11th century during the rule of the Khitan. At first it was applied to some small and still insignificant tribes in the area of the Onon River. In the 13th century, it grew into an umbrella term for a large group of Mongolic and Turkic tribes united under the rule of Genghis Khan under a same identity (mostly cultural).[4]

3. Sacred Tibet
November 30, 2007
Tibet has long been held as one of the religious sanctuaries of the world. It is the home of the Tibetan Monk, meditation, spiritual wholeness and inner peace so strong that it disregards the need for all material possessions. We admire Tibet, we crave what it represents and we’re a little afraid of it. Many of us forget that Tibet is a country that has the faced the loss of its culture many times over. They had to repel several attempts by the Mongols to invade and were successful through careful debate and compromise. The British, however, were not so easily swayed, especially as they brough... 5. Impressions of Russia
January 28, 2006
Whenever you travel to a country, it is important to avoid the tourist traps and get to know the locals. Here are my impressions of Russia.
Created in the 12th century, Russia was originally a much smaller country. Known as Muscovy, the country was formed in the golden ring area surrounding present day Moscow. After being dominated by the Mongols for a few hundred years, the country began to slow start conquering lands and expanding.
Russia as we know it today didn’t really form until Peter the Great came on the scene. A very tall man, Peter the Great could be considered the first g... (read more)
