See text. Length varies but is rarely greater than 16 mm (0.6 inch)[4], and weight up to 2.5 mg (0.04 grain). A mosquito can fly for 1 to 4 hours continuously at up to 1–2 km/h[5] travelling up to 10 km in a night. Most species are nocturnal or crepuscular (dawn or dusk) feeders. During the heat of the day most mosquitoes rest in a cool place and wait for the evenings. They may still bite if disturbed. Mosquitos are adept at infiltration and have been known to find their way into residences via deactivated air conditioning units.[6] Both male and female mosquitoes are nectar feeders, but the females of many species are also capable of hematophagy (drinking blood ]). Females do not require blood for their own survival, but they do need supplemental substances (like protein and iron) to develop eggs. Prior to and during blood feeding, they inject saliva into the bodies of their source(s) of blood. Female mosquitoes hunt their blood host by detecting carbon dioxide (CO2) and 1-Octen-3-ol from a distance. Mosquitoes of the genus Toxorhynchites never drink blood.[7] This genus includes the largest extant mosquitoes, the larvae of which prey on the larvae of other mosquitoes. These mosquito eaters have been used in the past as mosquito control agents, with varying success.[8]

So, what really is a heartworm? This is a parasitic roundworm which can be transferred from one host to another through mosquito bites. It is commonly found in dogs but has recently infected other animals like cats, foxes... (read more)

4. Malaria: Modern Cures
November 03, 2008
Malaria is a vector-borne infectious disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium, a parasite that spends part of its life cycle inside the mosquito, and is passed along to humans by mosquito bites. Malaria parasites are transmitted from one person to another by the female anopheline mosquito. The malaria parasite must grow in the mosquito for a week or more before infection can be passed onward. These parasites infect red blood cells (haemo protozoa).
Malaria is transported by the female mosquito. When an infected mosquito bites, she transmits malaria parasites... (read more)

September 26, 2008
Japanese Encephalitis is caused by a virus. Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a mosquito-borne Flavivirus that is closely associated to West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis viruses. Mosquitoes become infected by feeding on domestic pigs and wild birds infected with the Japanese encephalitis virus. Infected mosquitoes then transmit the Japanese encephalitis virus to humans and animals during the feeding process. The Japanese encephalitis virus is amplified in the blood systems of domestic pigs and wild birds. Japanese encephalitis virus is NOT transmitted from person-to-person.

July 10, 2008
Nothing annoys more than that little buzzing noise you hear of a mosquito flying around your bedroom late at night. Well, one thing does – the itch of a bite. So, how do you go about stopping it?
To figure out how to stop the itching, it first helps to understand why an itching sensation develops. Surprisingly, you will not “itch” the first time you are bitten by a mosquito. This is because the mosquito injects saliva and anti-coagulants into your skin to facilitate the feeding process. Your body will not react to these on the first bite. 19. Complete Information on Chikungunya
May 30, 2008
Chikungunya is a relatively rare form of viral fever caused by an alphavirus that is spread by mosquito bites. The disease resembles dengue fever, and is characterized by severe, sometimes persistent, joint pain(arthitis) , as well as fever and rash. Chikungunya virus infection of Aedes albopictus was caused by a point mutation in one of the viral envelope genes. Enhanced transmission of chikungunya virus by Aedes albopictus could mean an increased risk for chikungunya outbreaks in other areas where the Asian tiger mosquito is present. CHIKV infection can cause a debilitating illness.

Dengue fever is a flu-like illness spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. One major difference, however, is that malaria is often eradicated in major cities, whereas dengue is often found in urban areas of developed tropical nations, including singapore, taiwan, indonesia, and brazil. Caused by one of four closely related virus serotypes of the genus flavivirus, family flaviviridae, each serotype is sufficiently different that there is no cross-protection and epidemics caused by multiple serotypes can occur. Dengue is transmitted to humans by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which feeds during... (read more)
