A mound is a general term for an artificial heaped pile of earth, gravel, sand, rocks, or debris. The most common use is in reference to natural earthen formation such as hills and mountains, particularly if they appear artificial. The term may also be applied to any rounded area of topographically higher elevation on any surface. Artificial mounds have been created for a variety of reasons throughout history, including ceremonial ( platform mound), burial ( tumulus), and commemorative purposes (e.g. Kosciuszko Mound). In the archaeology of the United States and Canada, the term "mound" has specific and technical connotations. In this sense, a mound is a deliberately constructed elevated earthen structure or earthwork, intended for a range of potential uses. In European and Asian archaeology, the word "tumulus" may be used as a synonym for an artificial hill, particularly if the hill is related to particular burial customs. While the term "mound" may be applied to historic constructions, most mounds in the United States are prehistoric earthworks, built by Native American peoples. Native Americans built a variety of mounds, including flat-topped pyramids or cones known as platform mounds, rounded cones, and ridge or loaf-shaped mounds. Some mounds took on unusual shapes, such as the outline of cosmologically significant animals. These are known as effigy mounds. Some mounds, such as a few in Wisconsin, have rock formations, or petroforms within them, on them, or near them. While these mounds are perhaps not as famous as burial mounds, like their European analogs, Native American mounds also have a variety of other uses. While some prehistoric cultures, like the Adena culture, used mounds preferentially for burial, others used mounds for other ritual and sacred acts, as well as for secular functions. The platform mounds of the Mississippian culture, for example, may have supported temples, the houses of chiefs, council houses, and may have also acted as a platform for public speaking. Other mounds would have been part of defensive walls to protect a certain area. The Hopewell culture used mounds as markers of complex astronomical alignments related to ceremonies.

October 30, 2008
Fish Ao Nang - Gillham's Fish Resort Monster-fishing, Thai style This article was originally published in Adrenaline e-zine. 6. MLB Tickets - Sheets and Lee Both Deserving, Not My Choices
August 30, 2008
Everyone wants MLB Tickets to see a dominant pitcher take the mound. The managers of the All-Star teams have announced Ben Sheets and Cliff Lee as their respective starters. Both of these pitchers are having great years and definitely deserve to start in the midsummer classic, but neither of them are the guys I would have selected.
Cliff Lee is a great story. The guy had an 18-win season two years ago and had a tumultuous 2007 in which he was actually sent down to the minors. He’s returned in magnificent form this season. At the break, Lee has 12 wins and boasts a 2.31 ERA. These a... (read more)

Sailors had it for years. Great explorers had it as well. If you go on an expedition to an ancient Aztec mound, more than likely the archaeologist will have one too - so, why shouldn't you own one? No, I'm not speaking of the scurvy that plagued the sailors! No, I'm not speaking of the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot, whom explorers claimed to have seen in snowy Manitoba winters. Nor am I speaking of a lost city, which was never truly lost, but simply buried under mounds of earth and recently dug up by an archaeologist. I'm speaking of journals. Journals? Yes! 18. What I Know and Remember About Baseball - First Base Reach
October 29, 2007
It is a tight game and the batter is a known bunter. Third and Second baseman are playing in on the grass in anticipation. The Pitcher delivers an inside fastball. Just as the Pitchers arm is ready to release the batter squares around and shows bunt.
Third base crashes down to gather up the ball which takes a funny hop to the infield away from his glove. Not a good bunt as the ball moves between third baseman and the mound. The batter is fast and is halfway to first when the third baseman finally gains control of the ball. As he grasps the ball the throw the runner is now one third of th... (read more)

19. The Origins of the Area Rug
September 19, 2007
The oldest rug in existence was unearthed in Siberia in 1949 by a Russian archeologist. Referred to as the Pazyryk rug, this pile knotted carpet was discovered in a burial mound preserved in ice. Radiocarbon testing dates the rug around 5th century BC and it shares some similarities with later oriental rugs. These traits include a central field with rows of squares with a floral pattern in each. These squares are contained within a border of octagons resembling later Turkoman weavings. It is believed this rug is not likely a nomadic product, but rather the product of an Achaemenid carpet ... (read more)

20. Chapleau Crown Game Preserve Part II
July 30, 2007
"Platform # 3" was next and it was a little more substantial. It also had a mound of wood chips at the entrance to the path and a worn walkway around it. We choose the walkway around. Only about 50 feet off the road this stand warned of an electric fence around it. We never did see where the electricity came from and I was not brave enough to test it.
The platform was anchored on four tree trunks placed on concrete pads. We had to open a gate to get inside the electric wire fence to the ladder. I guess it would offer a little protection if a black bear or moose was after you. First to cl... (read more)

24. Why Shaving Your Beautiful Vagina Matters

Your vaginal area and clitoris are too beautiful to hide from either yourself or your man, and that pubic hair beyond just a wisp is not sexy and feminine to most men.

25. The Importance of Toys
March 27, 2007
What are toys, anyway? To me they are a transport to fantasy, a source of dismay, a simple distraction, food for creativity. a link to a better time. but to all, an absolute necessity. Do you recall your childhood? I know mine consisted of creating a mound of dirt under the huge oak tree in the back yard. I would pack it down tight and poke a hole down the center from its peak to the base. Then a garden hose, previously placed, would direct a flow of water out the newly created channel, and presto, a new volcano was born! Of course this was no simple task, as every piece of my Tonka ... (read more)
