Mount Vesuvius (in Italian Monte Vesuvio and in Latin Mons Vesuvius) is an active stratovolcano east of Naples, Italy. It is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years, although it is not currently erupting. The two other volcanoes in Italy, (Etna and Stromboli) are located on islands.

Mount Vesuvius is on the coast of the Bay of Naples, about nine kilometres (six miles) east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It is conspicuous in the beautiful landscape presented by that bay, when seen from the sea, with Naples in the foreground. Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in AD 79 that led to the destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. It has erupted many times since and is today regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the population of 3,000,000&_160;people now living close to it and its tendency towards explosive eruptions. It is the most densely populated volcanic region in the world.

Mount Vesuvius was regarded by the Greeks and Romans as being sacred to the hero and demigod Heracles/Hercules and the town of Herculaneum, built at its base, was named after him.

Some of the theories about the origin of the name Vesuvius include

1. The Explosive attraction of Naples
October 15, 2008

Lying in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, Naples is a scenic spot that is certainly one for the memories. One of Europe’s most densely populated cities, the charm of Naples towers above the chaotic nature of the city and its enthusiastic locals. Despite modern urbanization, the city’s structure and landscape still manages to remind visitors of its rich history and ancient Greek heritage. Naples is a lively and vibrant city that has an array of wonderful historical and artistic treasures waiting to be found in and around the narrow, winding streets. And with its close proximity to many intere... (read more)

2. Male Sexual Health: Past and Present
August 08, 2007

Preoccupation with the male genitalia and virility is not a new social behavior. Ancient civilizations had already placed a high value on the phallus not only for sexual reasons but also for the preservation of peace and order. The phallus was a very important symbol in the Roman Empire, specifically in the city of Pompeii. Pompeii is famous for being the Roman city that was literally buried in lava, mud, and rocks when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 B.C. Accidentally discovered in 1748, the city was found beneath meters of ash and pumice. People who resided in that city were found stone-... (read more)

3. Italy - Naples and Sorrento
November 03, 2005

Italy is really two countries in one with the wealthy, historic north dominating. To get a taste of the south, Naples and Sorrento are your destinations. Naples If ever there was a city with a reputation, it is Naples. Dirty, nasty, crime infested and fanatical are all words thrown around when describing. In this case, the descriptions are true and it is GREAT! The place is a madhouse and colorful beyond description. Crime is a problem, but you will be fine if you use common sense. Naples is all about “real.” You will not get that odd touristy sensation you find in the cities to the ... (read more)
