Nebraska ( IPA /n?'bræsk?/) is a state located on the Great Plains of the Midwestern United States. Nebraska probably gets its name from the archaic Otoe words Ñí Brásge pronounced [??i'b?ask?] (contemporary Otoe Ñí Bráhge) or the Omaha Ní Btháska pronounced [?ni'b?ðaska] meaning "flat water," after the Platte River that flows through the state. [3] Once considered part of the Great American Desert, it is now a leading farming and ranching state. Native American tribes in Nebraska have included the Iowas, Omahas, Missourias, Poncas, Pawnees, Otoes, and various branches of the Sioux. On May 30, 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act created the Kansas Territory and the Nebraska Territory, divided by the Parallel 40° North. The territorial capital of Nebraska was Omaha. In the 1860s, the first great wave of homesteaders poured into Nebraska to claim free land granted by the federal government. Many of the first farm settlers built their homes out of sod because they found so few trees on the grassy land. Nebraska became the 37th state in 1867, shortly after the American Civil War. At that time, the capital was moved from Omaha to Lancaster, later renamed Lincoln after the recently assassinated President of the United States Abraham Lincoln.

1. State Insurance Carriers
November 21, 2008
State insurance carriers offer hail insurance, life insurance, workmen's compensation insurance, unemployment insurance, disability insurance, second-injury funds, and Torrens title insurance. Of course, in the beginning not every state had all these funds. In fact, only Wisconsin had a life fund at first; and very few states had hail insurance, title insurance, or disability funds.
Hail insurance funds were established in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Nebraska to indemnify subscribers for losses to their tillable acreage resulting from hailstorms. However, ... (read more)

3. Is Cooking an Art, a Science, or a Pain?
November 05, 2008
For me, cooking has always been fun. I started cooking in my younger day back in Nebraska. Luckily, my mother was patient enough to teach me. For my wife, she’s glad I have fun doing it. What is your vote? Do you cook for pleasure, or necessity?
If you have the right equipment, a comfortable kitchen, and are willing to try different things, cooking can be fun. Having someone to clean up after you helps, too. Most ovens are self-cleaning now, so being a little sloppy pulling your cooked item out of the oven isn’t quite so critical. You just wipe up what you can, and self-clean sometime in... (read more)

4. Oklahoma vs. Nebraska
November 03, 2008
Sooners -22 vs. Cornhuskers
One of the pseudo-annual gems in the college football season takes Saturday night in Norman Oklahoma as the Sooners welcome Nebraska. The game has lost some of its luster as of late because after playing for 71 straight season, the game has taken two lengthy breaks and Nebraska has struggled to regain its national power form they had prior to this decade. For Sooner fans, Texas is the big rival and maybe that plays right into the Cornhusker's hands. If Oklahoma is looking past Nebraska, they may be right for the upset. But upsets have been few and far between t... (read more)

6. Texas Tech vs. Nebraska
October 14, 2008
Red Raiders - 20 1/2 vs Cornhuskers
This match up between the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Texas Tech Red Raiders should be another display of offensive perfection on the Nebraska defense.
The Cornhuskers will be looking to rebound from being absolutely dominated by Missouri last weekend in which they gave up 52 points to the Tigers in their second loss of the season. Not only did the Tigers destroy the Cornhuskers, but they scored their 52 points in only three quarters of play which doesn’t say much for Nebraska’s defense.
The Red Raiders continue to impress with their high pow... (read more)

8. The E. coli Disaster
August 13, 2008
The E. coli Disaster By Sandy Powers
Dead rats shoveled into sausage-grinding machines; bribed inspectors; diseased cows slaughtered for beef; filth and guts swept off the floor to be sold as “potted ham”---exposé of the Chicago’s meat-packing industry in Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle,” published in 1906. An outraged public demanded reforms in the meat industry. Congress responded with the creation of the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act of 1906, which later became the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Crippled and diseased cows electrically prodded a... (read more)

10. North Dakota Forclosure Laws
June 23, 2008
Nebraska is one of the states where foreclosure must be followed through a judicial or in court method. The process begins when the bank files a law suit called a complaint with the court against the homeowner who is having trouble making his payments. The objective of this lawsuit, is to get the court to officially declare the homeowner in default. When this has been accomplished the process of moving toward the sale of the house can begin. The court will decree the amount that the homeowner must pay and give them a short time frame in which to pay that money. If the homeowner cannot do ... (read more)

So You THINK You Have a Hot Prospect? Yeah, Right.
Omaha, Nebraska is where my business is based and where I maintain a primary residence.
As I travel the country and mention Omaha, I hear a number of comments. Typical lame farmer jokes (this is a metro area of close to a million people), and comments from uninformed elitists who think it is the same place as Oklahoma (hullo, that would be a STATE).
Also, many people associate Omaha with,

-Mutual of Omaha and Wild Kingdom

It doesn't matter if you're a fan of the Wildcats, Bobcats or Wolfpack. If you're a fan of any college football team chances are you've seen red while rooting "go go [insert any team name here]” when going up against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. 15. Husker Football Tickets Sell Out at Lincoln's Memorial Stadium - A Husker Football Tradition
March 29, 2008
While the Husker football team has had it's ups and downs over the years, one thing has remained consistent: Sell-out crowds at Memorial Stadium.
Lincoln's Memorial Stadium was built in just over 90 working-days in 1922. It was named in honor of all Nebraskans who served in the Spanish-American Wars, the civil war, and World War I -- it would later honor those Nebraskans that served in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam.
The first Husker football game held in the stadium was against Kansas on October 20, 1923. The two teams tied, scoreless. Since then, the Nebraska Cornhus... (read more)

19. Nebraska Unclaimed Money Exceeds $85 Million
February 15, 2008
Omaha steaks are likely the most well known treasure to come out of Nebraska in recent years, but there's something even juicier that NE residents will find is more interesting to them personally. As recently as 2007, Nebraska unclaimed money totaled more than $85 million, and counting. Despite the fact that the State Treasurer's Office holds quite a few “outreach” events to connect people with their lost assets, lack of education on the matter means that more money comes in than goes out to the rightful owners.
Living in a state with only roughly 1.7 million people, Nebraska residents ... (read more)

Whether you live in Nebraska or you’re a displaced Maverick, when college football season hits there’s no better way to celebrate your passion for pigskin than a pre-game party in the parking lot.
And while you can take your two-person sports car, van or SUV to the party, my vehicle of choice is always my GMC Sierra. Because of its roomy seating and bed that’s big enough for my barbecue, it’s the only truck we take to the games all season long.

24. Football Situational Handicapping
November 16, 2007
Courtesy of http://www.vegasonlinesports.com
There was a game like this recently when Nebraska was playing at Texas. The Longhorns were a big favorite because Nebraska was on a 3-game skid where the defense was getting run all over. But in a big rivalry game, the Huskers played an attacking, blitzing defense and played with fire the whole game, nearly winning, and getting the cover easily as a 20-point dog. There was more to that game than just match-ups.
I recall pair of games a year ago at this time involving the same team: Louisville. A West Virginia/Louisville showdown was a u... (read more)
